Glasshoughton welcomed singer/comedian Johnny Martell on stage tonight; he looks good and is always dressed right for the stage; the sound equipment is excellent as are his backing tracks. Johnny was already on stage when I arrived, his voice is very good. I once said of Johnny that if his voice ever deserted him he would make it as a comedian; well his voice is still there and he is a fine comedian. I saw two sets from Johnny who reads his audience and chooses the right songs. songs like,‘Build Me Up Buttercup’, ‘Hello’, a Neil Diamond song, there were Drifters songs, the Platters were featured, the Stylistics and many more. The one I particularly enjoyed was, ‘So Deep Is The Night’. A very enjoyable night of entertainment from Johnny Martell ...

Telephone; 01274638879 or 07850128691 Leanne Taylor I had a message from Jason Taylor who tells me that his wife Leanne Taylor was ’crowned “Europe’s Number One Tribute to Adele" at Europe's "Ultimate Tribute Contest" Grand Final. This took place in Blackpool on Thursday April 26th at the Norbreck Castle Hotel. The event was broadcast live on the Internet across the globe and was watched by 1000's including promoters, agents and producers in Las Vegas and Nashville. Congratulations Leanne A Full Day On Sunday…
I must be dedicated to my music and entertainment; I spent an afternoon in a very busy Westgate Common club watching and listening to the wonderful music from Family band, BeardSmith. They were in sparkling form; they have changed the sets around quite a bit although they did star off with everybody’s favourite, ‘Wipe-out’ in which Gillan, the youngest member of the band played the drums, brother Ged joined in too. There were solo songs from Alice, Ged, Gary, Graham and not forgetting dad, Neil. You really have to see this band to appreciate my comments. They were a great success on their recent Blackpool Command performance… Tonight I visited Hoyland Belmont club where I saw a good friend and singer, the immaculately dressed, Jon Dean. Some of his songs were, ‘My Son’, ‘The Answer’, ‘The Living Years and a good old up tempo country song called, ‘I’m Much Too Young To Feel This Old’, a Garth Brooks song. Jon has spent a lot of time on the Spanish holiday resort, Benidorm where he was very popular. That was the first time I ever saw him and liked him then. Look out for him ata club near you... Jon Dean... My next stop was at Outwood Club, Wakefield where I saw the Hull duo, Russ X and Sooz Donkin who together are, ‘Exit’. What a super duo they are; they were on the last set when I arrived and were dressed in what I would describe as Rockers leathers. “LTS and B”.In this very impressive set they sang, Starship’s ‘We Built This City’ , Duffy’s, ‘Mercy’, Nicki French’s version of, ‘A Total Eclipse Of The Heart’, ‘Sex On Fire’, ‘Human’, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, ‘Come On Eileen’ and a terrific Meatloaf duet, ‘Paradise By The dashboard Light’. Two top class singers... A couple of years or so ago Russ X was the winner of the Wakefield Star Search… Do you remember a band from the 1950's called, "The Jack O' Diamonds?
The picture is an old one but it's the best I have. Pictured left to right:- Phil Bonner on a single snare drum, Terry Webster, Pat Webster, Dave Bradley and Terry McEvoy... Wow, what a great night out for Pat and I on Saturday night; we were in a busy Westgate common club for a double helping of entertainment. The first act on stage was Castleford’s Emily Peters; my, how this young lady has progressed into a fine entertainer. Her stage attire is superb and I Lts... Emily opened her show with a Tom Jones number, ‘It’s Not Unusual’ that went down well with the members; more of Emily’s songs were, Elton John's ‘I’m Still Standing’, Rainbow's ‘Since You Been Gone’, Journey’s, ‘Faithfully’ and Adele’s, ‘Set Fire To The Rain’ and what a lovely version this was. Well done Emily...
Next on stage was young man from Thorne, near Doncaster, Mark Ellis. He was smart but casually dressed; he has a tremendous voice with a good range; his facial expressions are so funny and his overall presentation, excellent. Mark sang some great songs in his set that included, ‘Back To Black’, ‘Together In Electric Dreams’, ‘Mack The Knife, and ‘Cry Me A River’. You really have to see these two excellent entertainers who were both at their best... We finished our night at the Horse And Jockey in Horbury Bridge where landlady Karen had booked Wakefield’s own, “Scratch Band”. As usual they had volunteer singers in Stan The Man, Ginner and former band member, Mick Linskey; all in fine voice. Some of the band’s songs were, ‘Nowhere Man’, ‘Here Comes The Sun’, a couple of Smokie and a Status Quo medley. I liked the last song of the night, ‘More Like the Movies’, a Doctor hook song that the late Frank ‘Heppy’ Hepworth used to finish his night off. Yes folks, a great night for Mr and Mrs ‘T’... Pictured below, left to right it's Emily Peters, Mark Ellis and The Scratch Band... Skellow Grange WMC...
This is a club that I don’t ever remember visiting but a call from a friend assured me that I have back in my band days. Off I went wondering what to expect, when I arrived I found it was a night with Vocaltutor students doing a show; I saw a few of the girls doing their stuff on stage. This is a massive stage and a very impressive concert room; some great lights and large dressing rooms. The first girl I saw was show presenter, Rose; she introduced Lauren Rosso who has quite nice voice and sang, ‘Valerie’ and ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’. Lauren looked good in her stage outfit, (Lts)... Lauren was followed by a young lady with a lovely voice, ‘Justine’. She sang just a couple of songs, The Corrs, ‘Runaway’ and a song called, ‘Stay‘. She too looked great in her stage wear, Lts. The next girl was Bianca who was casually dressed; she has a nice voice and sang, ‘Ironic’and a super version of ‘Fever’. The next young singer was Kloe, (Her spelling), Kloe sang an Elton John song, ‘Your Song’. Alexandra was the next singer, she has a very strong and well controlled voice; I saw her last year in a talent competition and she reminded me of a junior competition in Barnsley when she reached the final. Well Alexandra has made great strides and he voice is really good. Her stage outfit was good, (Lts). A couple of her songs were, ‘Somebody To Love’ , (with the long note) and ‘Forget You’. Well time was against me and I had promised to be elsewhere so I took my leave; I did enjoy the show though... I was just in time to see Red at Alverthorpe club; Steve and Debbie will be parting company in June so it was probably the last time I could see Brad and Debbie Dee together; Debbie is going off to be a solo artiste, I think she will be successful. I was in time for the dance set and although the club wasn’t full, there were plenty of dancers. A couple of the songs were, ‘There’s a Heartache Tonight’ and ‘I Just Can’t Get Enough’.Brad has a new partner who will be starting in early June, though it will be sad to see Debbie go I am looking forward to seeing Brad’s new partner... A Hose Pipe Ban? I think enough rain fell tonight to abandon that law don’t you? The weather certainly affected the attendance at the Willow Park social club in Pontefract for Ricky Graham Leisure’s audition night. There were four auditionees of which I saw three. The first act was Richie Cullen from Halifax who was dressed smartly, a good voice and good equipment. He sang in his set, ‘Beautiful Noise’, ‘Take It Easy’ and ‘Have I The Right’, A Honeycomb's number one in July 1964...
The second act was a young lady called Natasha Bosely from Rothwell near Leeds. I have seen Natasha before and I like her style. She was a bit on the nervous side but performed well; she has a good sound system, dresses well for the stage and Lts. Natasha has a strong voice and some of her songs were, ‘Next To Me’, ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’, ‘Rocking All Over The World’ and Celine Dion’s, ‘Think Twice’. The third act was Morley girl, Amy Louise who was dressed in a short black sequined dress and Lts. A good sound system, a good voice and personality; some of Amy’s songs were, ‘Sway’, ‘Bleeding Love’, (I‘ve not heard that for a while), ‘Run Around Lou’ and ‘Never Forget You’. I was on my way out by the time the last act took the stage; I just managed to catch his first song in which he had the sound of Neil Diamond in his voice. I’ll speak to Harry tomorrow for his name, he sounded very good but I had to leave... Hemsworth Miners Welfare Senior Citizens Party.
There was a full house e at the club which is known locally as, ‘The Pit Club’ this is an annual event where he members are treated to a nice tea and two entertainers. I saw the former concert secretary, Keith McIntyre who relinquished the job recently; he is looking well and we had a chat about old times in the clubs. The first act on stage was the two brothers, Robert and Paul, ‘The Sharpe Experience’.I have seen the lads many times and still have a good laugh; they have added some new material into the act which went down well. The second act was my good friend, ‘Simply H’, he was in good voice singing the songs the members liked and they were singing along. The club’s stewardess Tracy Lucas, told me told about the bands that play on the last Saturdays of each month. This coming Saturday, the 28th it’s ‘Here’s Johnny’. On bank holiday Monday May 6th it’s ‘The Boyz’, a very popular band in this club. Saturday May 26th, a band called, ‘Band Of Brothers’ are booked and on Bank Holiday Sunday, June 6th, it’s the ever popular, ‘BeardSmith’. From the Pit Club I called in at my local, the New Inn’, in Walton, Wakefield. This is an open mic night where you can be the star. I saw a gentleman called ‘Will Nicholson’. He plays acoustic guitar and it sounded very good, the chords and finger picking were excellent; Will also sang a few numbers, wow, what a superb voice! A couple of the songs he sang were, ‘Everybody’s Talkin’, ‘Ain’t No Sunshine and from Pogy and Bess, Summertime. You should call into the New Inn; I am reliably informed that it’s always a good night... |
