Glasshoughton WMC Welcomes Jimmy Echo. Just how many years has Jimmy been on the club's circuit. A lot I know; It's always a pleasure seeing him, he has a great voice, good sound equipment and is a class guitarist. All the sounds from the stage come from Jimmy, his own home produced tracks, his guitar and his voice. Tonight, as always, looking good, he opened his show with. Looking around the busy concert room I saw entertainers who, like I do, admire Jimmy's skills. A few well chosen comedy one liners make a good night of entertainment. A couple of the songs that stood out for me were, tonight he opened with a Ronan Keating song, 'Life Is A Roller Coaster', A Drifters song was,'It's Gonna Be An All Night Party'. More of Ronan Keating's hits, The Eagles were featured, the song was one new to me, 'Love Will Keep Us Alive', like that one and it suits Jimmy's voice too. One of Willie Nelson's, 'There You Are', what a super song. A Stevie Wonder song was, 'Lately'. Jim closed this set with an Everly Brothers hit, 'Crying In The Rain'. A great mix of songs from the incomparable Jimmy Echo..
Don't forget the Junior Talent competition here in Glasshoughton club. I called in to the Ship in Horbury Bridge that was very busy last night. I was met with the news that Iain and Kirsty have left the pub: they are taking over the Railway in Mirfield. This was very sudden, I wish them every success. They were certainly doing a great job in the Ship. June 21st, Father's Day in Pontefract Ambience Pub. Yes the Ambience was the former, Ex-service men's club. The artiste for tonight is 'Leanne', the place is very busy and it's only 8pm. I seem to remember Leanne from a club in Wakefield a year or so ago, (Lofthouse Gate), but I could be wrong. Yes folks, it is Leanne, looking lovely in her stage attire, a purple off the shoulder top, a short black skirt and yes, like the shoes, no, boots. Leanne has a good strong voice, the PA is good. Her first song was an Adele song, 'To Make You Feel My Love', a Bryan Adams song was, 'Everything I Do'. She sure puts lots of feeling into her songs. More songs were Robbie Williams, Boyzone, Billy Ocean, Take That and to close the set it was a Queen song, 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. A good set from 'Leanne'.
My next visit is to the Ship in Horbury Bridge where I saw New Vintage, a young 3 Piece band, I have seen them on a couple occasions and have to say what a terrific improvement. I have a lot of faith in these young musicians Watch this space. Alverthorpe was my next visit to see that lovely singer, Kim B, I like her stage outfit, she was wearing white shorts and a striped top and! like the shoes. A few of her songs were, 'Get The Party Started' and Journey's,'Don't Stop Believing', ok we'll add 'Sway'. I haven't seen Kim for some time, she really is doing well. Amy Winehouse, Girls Allowed, or is it Aloud. An excellent set from, 'Kim 'B'. Crigglestone WMC Welcomes, 'Jive Express'. Rock and Roll band The club was busy tonight to see this colourfully dressed band. Three guitarists, a drummer and a Vocalist. Len is the lead vocalist and is quite comedian too an'They have an impressive PA system; the first number in the set was an instrumental; followed by, 'Da Do Ron Ron', and 'You Got What It Takes' . The harmonies are very good and one of the guitarists, Kenny, switched to a saxophone. The lead singer, Len has a great voice, there was one by Bobby Darin, 'Dream Lover', there was a Marty Wilde hit from the early 60's, 'Teenager In Love'. There were lots of the old ones, loved it, Hermans Hermits. There were lots of one liners in the show. The Big Bopper's 'Chantilly Lace', there was one by Bobby Vee, 'Take Care Of My Baby', 'Be My Baby' was a popular one in my old days. 'Emily Ford's, 'What D'ya Wanna Make Those Eyes At Me For'. Shakin' Stevens, 'Marie Marie'. This attracted some dancers. Yes folks it was a super atmosphere here in Crigglestone Wmc. There was 'RIP It Up', one by Little Richard. The next song in the set was, 'Ce La Vie', they closed the set with, 'Every Time That You Walk In The Room'. Not just a good set entertaining, that's, JIVE EXPRESS. Lead vocals is,Len On bass guitar, Steve, Lead guitar its Kenny who also plays Saxophone, and on drums its Keith A nice busy house at Crigglestone Club.
Admiral Duncan, the band is one of my favourites, 'Rooster', they were in full flow when we arrived singing a Gene Vincent song, 'Be Bop A Lula'. Then a Buddy Holly big hit, 'Peggy Sue', 'Gudbye To Jayne', 'Slade'. 'Rock Around The Clock'. Bill Hayley. There were some of 'Pat's favourites, The Commitments, 'Mustang Sally'. She hates the song... We only caught the back end of their set But enjoyed what we saw and heard. Rooster... Tonight I Am here in the Nash,
(Albion Street Wmc In Castleford). The artiste tonight is a young attractive young lady called Alexandra Crellin,; she looked good in her stage outfit, like the shoes. I remember Alexandra when she was in a talent competition, in which she did well. Alexandra has a lovely voice, she opened her set with a song called, 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough', followed by 'There You'll Be'. 'Love Really Hurts'. Her stage outfit consists of a shortish dark coloured skirt and sequinned top. I have already noted the shoes, ok, here we go again, 'like the shoes'. Alexandra has a wide repertoire. Love her show. Well I think this is her first visit here in the Nash, she seems to be going well with the members. 'Get Right Back To Where I Started', 'Young Hearts', 'Proud Mary', 'River Deep Mountain High'. Alexandra closed her set with, 'It's Raining Men'. The B & S club in Featherstone is busy tonight, I got here just in time for BINGO, hey! bingo helps makes the club's tick over. The entertainment is two lovely ladies who are, 'Seventh Heaven'. The equipment is good as are their backing tracks. I Like the stage attire, black trousers and blue sequinned tops. 'like the shoes.'The girls opened their show with, 'Baby When You're Gone', two lovely voices and tight harmonies, all the stage moves are choreographed. 'Foot Loose' was the next song; the members just love the girls. The next song, California Dreaming' was brilliant, I'm still loving the harmonies. They are Brilliant. There was an Abba song, 'Chiquitita', again those harmonies. Not forgetting the smiles from the girls. They sound more like ABBA than ABBA. There was, 'Build Me Up Buttercup'. One from Queen, The dance floor is full, and I mean, FULL. There was a Fleetwood Mac song I really loved called, 'Go Your Own Way'. Do NOT miss this tremendous duo, 'Seventh Heaven'. Lots more but I wanna listen and watch. The blonde lady is. Leah The Brunette is Layla... The Northfields In South Kirkby.
The place was reasonably busy tonight when one arrived at 6-40pm. Entertainment tonight was John Fitzpatrick who looked, as he always does. His voice gets ever better, a few of his songs were, 'The Wedding', 'Red' and an Elvis Presley song, 'Return To Sender'. There were songs you don't hear too often like this which is a Bobby Bloom song, (guess which that was), songs by Marty Robins, Emile Ford, the Backstreet Boys. It was good to see many friends here, there was Billy, Denise, Linda, me young mate, Lee Lambert and of course, John's lovely missus, Sharon. One of John's most requested songs was, 'Sex On Fire' , This went down really well, infact one of our friends, Billy was in tears with laughter. I liked John's version of, 'Release Me', there was an impressive version of an Englebert Humperdinck hit song from 1966. There was a Nat King Cole song, 'Smile'. John ended his show with a terrific dance set. Well done J. F. I have to say the atmosphere in the Northfields is excellent and the locals are very friendly. Encores followed AND Sharon, John's wife did her party piece when she sang Lulu's, 'Shout'. A great session of entertainment... My next call was in the Willow Park Social Club. It was the occasion of the Pontefract & District Pool league. On stage is another great pal, comedian and vocalist, John Gillan. John was the guest comedian at the Blackpool Command Awards Show. Most people will know that John has an operatic standard voice, he also sings songs by Simple Minds, Joe Cocker, Pavarotti and lots more his comedy well, wow. No joke on here or song titles. Enough to say that John is a top entertainer. He closed his set with an Eagles song called, 'Desperado'. Brilliant John Fitzpatrick. Gilly's Traditional Country Music In Westgate Common. Yet another good house. While I remember, next Tuesday its a change of artiste, the artiste is an excellent duo,The Whiskey Duo. The country singer tonight was a guy from Hull called Dave Montana. Dave looked good in his stage gear, he plays a mean guitar and his voice is very good. In his first set he sang, 'In The Corner Of The Room Stands A Juke Box', this one is by the Gatlins. 'This Is Where The Cowboy Rides Away'. Their are some backing tracks covering more guitars, bass and drums. A good sound. 'Dave's next song was, 'Falling In Love'. There was one called,'Eighteen Yellow Roses', a Marty Robins song; there were many more most of which were new to me but that's the beauty of country music, you hear something different each time you see the artistes. The audience joined to the next song, 'Okie From Muskogee', don't worry, I'll check the spelling. 'Palma St Lucas'. I THINK. There was one called, 'The Reason Why', there was one called, 'Time Keeps Slipping Away'. I enjoyed Dave's show even if didn't know everything he sang. He finished his set with an Irish song called, 'Marlena'. 'It's Only Make Believe', a Conway Twitty song, he also wrote the song.
Tonight In Albion a Street Wmc, ( THE NASH) Castleford The concert room was busy as is usual on Tuesday nights. The entertainment tonight is the wonderful, Elt, sorry, Jon Alex; he is a multi instrument / vocalist and darned good too. He was already on stage when I arrived, (Traffic)' . John opened with a song called, 'Here Comes The Sun'. A Beatles song. I was in time to hear one I like to hear from Jon, 'Another Tequila Sunrise'. John has quite a wide repertoire and the instruments with which he uses to accompany himself. Songs by the Kinks, George Ezra, sang Budapest, there was a song I recognised, 'I Can't Get It Out Of My Head' Elo. Jon quickly switched to his keyboard and harmonica and sang, 'Piano Man', 'Jessie', the next was, 'I'll See You In My Dreams', accompanied on his ukulele. Jon Alex is a top class entertainer. Even closing his first set he played his own play off with the ukulele.
Tonight I Am In Glasshoughton WMC.
Michael C Langton is the act on stage tonight, looking very smart in a shiny suit, Like the shoes Michael. Some of his songs are, an Elvis Presley song, 'I Just Can't Help Believing', there was a Scott Walker song called, 'No Regrets', back to the tempo with a Tony Christie hit, 'Avenues And Alleyways'. This went down the proverbial storm. The next song was a Matt Monro song in which there was plenty of people joining in, a Long John Baldry song, 'Let The Heartaches Begin', not often heard these days, lots of the audience knew it and sang along with it. The last song in the set was a Gene Pitney hit, Michael was a great success in the Blackpool Command show earlier this year. It goes without fear of contradiction that, Michael C Langton was well received on stage both in Glasshoughton and in Blackpool; In fact many of the Blackpool audience said he had stolen the show. He can't have, we are going back again next year in April. |
