Lucas Primmer Lucas Primmer was asked by the council to perform at the Wakefield light switch-on (17th November), Pontefract light switch-on (21st November), and Castleford light switch-on (22nd November) .... He did an excellent job and everyone really loved his performance, in total he sung to almost 20,000 people over the three events which is a brilliant achievement. Lucas also supported Billy Pearce at a Charity event at Horbury WMC on Thursday 17th straight after he’d sung at Wakefield Lights. Lucas Primmer has a great future ahead of him. Let’s watch his progress… Paul Graham... The Beverley Arms welcome Paul... There were more people in the Beverly Arms this week when Paul Graham was the artiste on stage; Paul has a fine voice and a wicked sense of humour. You probably know Paul is one half of that super duo, “Picture this”. He was dressed casually smart, carries a good PA and lighting rig. He was coming to the end of his first set when I arrived. I managed to catch an excellent Motown medley which I enjoyed very much. Next week’s act, November 29th is another good local singer, ‘Steve Rose’. December 6th sees the return of family band, "BeardSmith”. Pictured below, Steve Rose and BeardSmith Stone Creek A Big Draw At Gilly’s CMC.
“Ain’t that right boys” is the catch phrase of country band Stone Creek that was appearing at Gilly’s Country Music Club on Tuesday night. The Wakefield City Club concert room was full at 8 o’clock such is this bands attraction even though this was the first public appearance for 18 years. The Stone Creek band’s line up is, lead singer/guitarist, Bradley Kincade, (Roy), on lead guitar, pedal steel, banjo and harmonica it’s Dr Red Rufus Kline, (Dave), on bass it’s Whore House Lucky Jim, (Mel) and on drums we have Marshall- Marshall the Sheriff. Their stage clothes are from the days of the western saloons, fabulous. My fingers are tired already! The music, the harmonies and the comedy is still there; they carry a good. A few of the songs were, ‘Baby What You Wanna Do’, ‘I'm My Own Grandpa’ and ‘Living On Tulsa Time’. I hope Chris books this band back in the not too distant future, they will fill the place again I’m sure. Speaking of the song, I'm My Own Grandpa' it reminded me that local country Star, 'Tony Smith' will be on stage at Gilly's net week. November [29th]... AKA Granpa T Smith... Be Early... It was good to see and old friend, 'Pete Wakefield' in the club. Pete was in quite a few bands including country bands some years ago and still loves his country music. Good to see you Pete... Below there are two pictures of Stone Creek and one of next week's act Granpa T Smith... Craige Anthony... A Busy Monday At Glasshoughton WMC. I do like a full club any day of the week and it was good to see Glasshoughton club in Castleford doing well. On stage was Craige Anthony, Craige works from the Flair Agency. He is always well dressed for the stage, tonight it was a suit and a blue shirt and oh, those multi coloured shoes, they are top drawer. Craige who has an excellent voice, sang In the set, ‘Knock On Wood, Do You Love Me, Save The Last Dance For Me and Have I Told You Lately That I Love You’. Another super performance from Craige Anthony! Barricade They're here again, the very entertaining comedy duo from South Wales, “Barricade”; the last time I saw them the exploding guitar went off with a mighty band scattering pieces into the audience. They had been mistakenly sold stronger detonators than they usually use. There was no harm done, just loud enough to wake the dead. Well tonight at Horbury WMC where they appear every year and have done for the past 12 years, the club was very busy with people coming from far and wide to see them. Although it was the dance set we saw, there was still lots of comedy; some of the songs were, ‘ Living Next Door To Alice’, (Minus the swear words), Jackie Wilson’s, ‘Higher and Higher’, ‘Love Really Hurts Without You, ‘I’m A Believer’ and many more. The dance floor was busy even when they sang, ’ (By Request), ‘Annie’s Song’ and, ‘The Working Man’. What a duo, funny and two fantastic singers with pitch perfect harmonies. Barricade is a name to remember!!! No doubt they will be booked back next year… Wakefield and Castleford based band, 'Touch Wood', a sixties harmony band, was the act on stage at Westgate Common WMC on Saturday night, Chris, (The Flockton Fryer), Tony on lead guitar,, Mike on keyboards, Greg on bass and Ken on drums were in fine form. Touch Wood as always were well dressed for the stage. Some of the songs in their first set were, 'I'll Go Where The Music Takes Me’, ‘Build Me up Buttercup’, ‘Itchy Coo Park’, ‘Lazy Sunday Afternoon’ and an Adam Faith song I hadn’t heard for a long time, ‘The First Time’. The Flockton Flyer tag refers to Chris who along with his lovely missus, Mags, run a fish and chips shop in Flockton. In the second set we heard songs by, The Trammps, The Move, Gary Pucket and Union Gap, the Four Tops and Chris Rea… With a few jokes along the way it was a good night. at Westgate Common... Mark Burrows In The City... Wakefield City Club welcomed Barnsley singer, Mark Burrows on Friday night. Mark has been around for many years but is still a top notch entertainer. He looked immaculate in a suit. He has an excellent voice and in a well chosen set he sang, ‘Big Bad Leroy Brown’, ‘La Mer’, (Beyond The Sea), Neil Sedaka’s, ‘The Hungry Years’, [my all time favourite song] and a nice version of, ‘If I Only Had Time’. I hope to see this gentleman again in the future... Tony Styles... Tony Styles Is Tony Christie... Tony was singing at the Hammer & Stithey on Friday night; it was a bit on the quiet side to start with but soon there were more people in the pub. Tony was as always very smart in a suit, shirt and tie and is known for his Tony Christie tribute show. In his first set he sang three of Tony Christie’s songs; ‘Avenues And Alleyways, Hey Las Vegas and Don’t Go Down To Reno’. He followed these up with the songs of Sammy Davis Junior and Frank Sinatra. A really good entertainer, Tony Styles... Luke Wins Star Search 2011...
18 years old Luke Murgatroyd was £1200 richer when he won the Castleford Star Search on Wednesday night... What a terrific atmosphere at Glass Houghton WMC on Wednesday night for the final of Star Search 2011. Compere Jonathan Carroll opened the show with a song, (‘My Girl’). He introduced the judging panel, Jade Adams, Rebecca Slater, Stuart Eden, Neil Crossland, Jason Mills, Amy Thomas, Dan Knights and Leanne Taylor, Competition producer/sound man, Steve Paige, the ladies on the bar, Jemma, Julie and Claire. The first contestant was Bradford’s Luke Murgatroyd who was very smart in a dark suit; Luke has a smashing voice and a good stage presence, no doubt the influence of his singing tutor Tony Wayne. A couple of his songs were, ‘Feeling Good’ and ‘Till I Hear You Sing Again’. A good opening to the show. Manchester girl Danielle Hobson looked stunning in a short black and white dress complete with silver adornments, (Lts). Danielle has a lovely strong voice, a good stage presence; she chose Queens, ‘Somebody To Love’ and ‘Alone’, an excellent performance. Closing the first half of the show was Normanton girl, Jasmine Batty, AKA, Jazz who also was a student of Tony Wayne; what a super entertainer this young lady is, she was dressed in a very short black dress over patterned tights, Lts, and sang, ‘All That Jazz’ and ‘Dance With My Father’. Another good show, she used every inch of the stage. After the interval Jonathan Carroll opened the second half with ‘Moonlighting’, He was on form tonight... he introduced the lovely Kayleigh Pearman who has a super soprano voice and can she hit the high notes... Kayleigh looked great in a turquoise evening gown and Lts... she chose to sing in her set, ‘The Music Of The Night’ and (In Italian) ‘Time To Say Goodbye’. Another excellent performance... Enter Castleford’s Emily Peters; again a stunning short black dress and yes... Lts... ‘I Drove All Night’ and a fantastic version of Whitney Houston’s ‘Saving All My Love For You’. Emily has a super voice and has lots more to offer. She used the stage well and has a good presentation... The final act of the night was Thomas Pywell from Worksop; he looked very smart in a waistcoat trousers and shirt. He has a strong voice and sang in his set, ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’ and ‘Sex On Fire’. Well, a difficult one for the judges, it was a super show with six good acts who all upped their performances. The final decision was, in first place, Luke Murgatroyd who collected £1,200, second was Jazz who won £500 and in third place was,Danielle Hobson who won £300. The Prizes were presented by the Club Secretary, Shaun Smith. As one person said to me, “it could have been any three from the six”.Well done everyone and thank you for a great final...
