The Return Of Jack And Robin…
The Lupset welcomed back local duo, Jack and Robin on Saturday night. On lead vocals and guitar, aided by backing tracks. It’s Jack and on lead guitar it’s the man himself, Robin is the cheeky chappy who is a wizard on guitar and puts more than a little comedy into the show. ‘I Swear’, ‘Route 66’, ‘All Shook Up’ and ‘We All Get Lucky Sometimes’. Jack is a past master at reviving songs we thought we had forgotten. Welcome back you guys, you are Leg Ends… [Sorry, Legends] Touchwood At The British Oak.
The British Oak in Stanley, Wakefield is building quite a reputation for service and entertainment these days. Andy and Fiona have certainly created a good atmosphere and made a great entertainment venue out of it. Andy is a well respected artiste on the clubs circuit. Tonight, (Saturday) saw local band, Touchwood’. They were going down the proverbial treat. Again, good musicians and a good lead singer in Chris Gill, on guitar it’s Tony, Bass player is Greg, on keyboards it’s Mike and on drums it’s Ken. ‘Hold Back The Night’, ‘Lady Willpower’, ‘The Fire Brigade’, ‘Can’t Fight This Felling’ and ‘All Or Nothing’ were some of the songs I heard. Another great night at, ‘The British Oak’. It was great to see the band and in top form… Next Saturday it’s, another local band, ‘Adverse Camber’… The Sharon Lewis Band…
The Sharon Lewis Band appeared at a well attended Crigglestone WMC on Saturday night,[July15th] and they were on top form but then I’ve never seen this band below par. It’s a four piece outfit with Sharon as lead vocalist, Craig is a master on keyboards, Dean is top class on guitar and Lee is a great drummer. A top class PA system and the lights are synchronised with the music. They opened the show with a superb version of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, what a sound, followed by Belinda Carlisle’s, ‘Heaven Is A Place on Earth’. ‘Gloria’, ‘Love Is A Battlefield’, 'Dakota', ‘All By Myself’ and the one that did it for me was Whitney Houston’s. ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’. The harmonies were note perfect, the stage outfits and the musicians are great; Sharon’s voice is just awesome. You really do have to see, ‘The Sharon Lewis Band’… It was a pretty busy West Green WMC in Barnsley on Friday night. I walked in on a charity show in aid of Barnsley Hospice. The acts advertised were unable to appear so into the breach stepped Vocaltutor Founder, Georgina Hill-Brown and her family. Before I arrived a gentleman called Tony Lewis had done a one hour set; I was unaware of this but thank you Tina Dean for letting me know. Tina herself was once on the clubs circuit. She was a soloist and also part of a duo with hubby Jon Dean...
After the Bingo 12 years old Ellie Kate appeared on stage. She has a good voice and sang in her set Stone Cold Sober, Turning Tables, Fire Wok and finished her set with, Never Forget You. Very well done Ellie Kate. Another game of Bingo (which helped to raise money for the Hospice), Enter Georgina who has an excellent voice; she sang in her set, Rain On Your Parade, Hopelessly Devoted To You, Close To You, The Show and many more. Georgina ended her song with the song that means a lot to her, Wild Horses. Around £300 was raised on the night; Well Done.. Thanks must go to Georgina's hubby, William Hill-Brown who provided the sound and looked after the lights and youngest daughter Alex who was there to give her valuable support. It was nice to meet the afore mentioned Tina Dean, a lovely lady... A Very Busy ‘Oliver Twist’ As I was passing the Oliver Twist pub on Thursday night I saw the car park was full; being nosy I called in and the place was heaving. There was a birthday and retirement party for HGV driver, [or did she say a Carer?] Marie going on; this probably accounted for maybe a third of the attendance. The restaurant was very busy and the lounge too was full. There were many more in the Childrens room and the tap room. It was great to see this pub coming back to life; Neil and Jeff, the proprietors, stage top class entertainment every Thursday and this week it was Jo Little, comedienne,; Jo was in sparkling form and for anyone who thinks her show is blue, let me tell you that this show was anything but. Jo is a very funny lady and she can sing too. When I went in I planned to be there for just half an hour but I was enjoying her show so much I stayed for about an hour. Jo sang a couple of songs that were well appreciated by the audience, ‘Stupid Cupid and Memory’. I have heard Jo sing many times but her version of Elaine Paige's 'Memory' blew me away. The rest of her show was hilarious comedy. Neil and Jeff told me that there are lots of top class artistes booked in and the Oliver Twist is now advertising in the Wakefield Review; the booking agency is TOTT, (Tricks Of The Trade). Onward and upwards Neil and Jeff. The Oliver Twist comes to life once again... Another Full House At Gilly’s... The Wakefield City Club was very busy on Tuesday night; the Country Music Club which is hosted by Gilly,[Chris Gill], On stage was a family trio called The Byrnes; Shaun is on bass Jake on Drums and Lyle on lead guitar is the line up. Each member of the band is a good musician with Shaun as lead singer, he has a great voice with a well controlled vibrato and a good range. Jake and Lyle fill in the harmonies. 'If Tomorrow Never Comes', 'Two Young Lovers', 'You Are The One' and 'Possession Is Nine Tenths Of The Law', were jus a few of the impressive songs. i’m sure we will be seeing The Byrnes at Gilly’s again in the not too distant future... This lady is Leanne Taylor who is the 'Adele Tribute' that will be hitting our clubs in the very near future...

I called in a couple of clubs on Sunday night where the act on stage was a replacement and as I had seen the act a couple of times in the last few weeks I decided to move on elsewhere. I called in at the Pontefract Ex-Servicemen’s club which judging by the car park looked as though it would be busy. The club doesn’t advertise these days so it was pot luck which paid off. There was a good turnout for this club on Sunday. On stage was young singer Lucas Primmer; Lucas has an excellent voice, good sound system and lights. He has a good range and a strong vibrato. A couple of his songs were, ‘Sex On Fire’, ‘Up On The Roof’ and ‘This Is The Moment’, Lucas sure has a wide repertoire. It’s great to see a full house; what is the secret of this club, I have yet to visit when it is quiet. It was also nice to see Marion Tomlin there, what a lovely lady she is… The Blue Light pub in Alverthorpe, Wakefield, is steadily building up it's Friday Night band scene; when I called in this week the local and popular Welsh T Band was playing. It is basically a Blues band but they cover other styles of music. My Babe and Albatross were just a couple on the night. Next Friday, (15th) it's 'Lit Up And Support', 22nd it's 'Phoenix Uprising' and on the 29th It's, 'Little Vegas Lies'. Come on people, let's give the 'Blue Light' some support... |
