Staincliffe Cricket Club is a club I haven’t been in for many years; I was in a band called the Dean Stanton Four back in the very early 60’s. Well I called in on Sunday night, (18th December) when I saw young singer Heidi Mills in this busy club. Heidi has a lovely voice and has learned a lot since I saw her last. Her stage presentation is much improved and her choice of songs was just right songs for the age group in the club. Heidi was dressed in a knee length black dress and yes! LTS, Some of her songs in her first set were, ‘Sway’, Adele’s ‘Make You Feel My Love’, The Corrs ‘Breathless’ and Beyonce’s ‘Ave Maria’. A very good first set from Heidi Mills who I’m sure will be big in the clubs.
Big Time Charlie Rock Alverthorpe…
Big Time Charlie is made up of Martin on lead vocals, keyboards, guitar, tambourine and anything else that was lying around the stage, Simon is the drummer and in charge of lights, Liam is the bass player and takes a couple of lead vocals and is in charge of stage logistics and lead guitarist is Kevin, (aka Flash). They were on stage at a packed Alverthorpe Club in Wakefield. The guys were in top form as they went through their final set; they play songs by Robbie Williams, Pulp, Cee-Lo Green, Razorlight, Wild Cherry, Stereophonics, The La's, Queen, Elvis Costello, Scissor Sisters, Toto, Abba, The Killers and many more. There were lots of dancers on the floor and a good time was had by all… "SASHA LAWRENCE" Sasha Lawrence In Brookhouse WMC... Whenever we see the name, “Sasha Lawrence” advertised at a club near us, Pat and I always make a bee line for this club which in this case was the New Brookhouse club in Wakefield. Sasha was her usual self, a fabulous singer, energetic and a zany character. She was dressed in a long black sequined evening dress, (Lts). Her opening songs were show songs, Cabaret and All That Jazz, These two openers were followed by, ‘Stay Just A Little Bit Longer’, ‘Be My Baby’ and an old Sarah Vaughn jazz number called, ‘It Might As Well Be Spring’. There were Adele songs in there as well as one for Mr T, a Bee Gee’s song, To Love Somebody’. Sasha Lawrence’s presentation is second to none; Pat and I love to see and hear this lady no matter what she sings. "Miss Sasha Lawrence" Whilst on my rounds tonight I received a text from Tom Jackson, Concert Secretary and Steward of Wakefield City WMC who told me about the false rumours going around saying that the City Club was closing. Tom told me, "There is no truth to the rumours". Come on members, get behind the club and make sure it doesn’t close and lets dispel these rumours.
Sassy In The City… Friday night in the Wakefield city club is artiste night in the large concert room; on stage tonight was that energy plus duo ‘Sassy’. Debbie and Amy looked terrific in their stage outfits, I particularly liked the Christmas Outfits, they were super... (LTS).they opened the set with a tried and trusted ‘Valerie’ followed by ‘Shine A Light’, An Andy Williams song, (Up Tempo), ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’, ‘Move Like Jagger’, I liked the Christina Auilera +Maroon song, 'Move Like Jagger'. There were Tom Jones, Billy Ocean, and Gabrielle songs. A really versatile duo and beautiful with it. Go and see Sassy….You deserve a treat... Merry Christmas Everyone... Darren York was the artiste on stage at Alverthorpe club on Friday; he was very smartly dressed in a dark suit, (with a red lining) and white shirt. (Liked his shoes) Darren has a terrific voice, a great sense of humour and rapport with the audience. In his show he sang, ’Jesamine’ a Casuals song from the ‘60’s,a brilliant version of Michael Bolton’s, ‘Drift Away’, this was a recording he had done with the aid of a guy from the Roadhouse soft rock duo; ‘Maggie’ a Foster And Allen song. There were songs by the Searchers, Rod Stewart, The Temptations and The Eagles. I loved the links between the songs. A top entertainer. It’s a shame there weren’t more people there to see the show.
Darren will be appearing at Doncaster’s Trade Club in the town centre on Tuesday 20th December at 2pm with Neil and Rick who are,’ Roadhouse’. What a show that will be. Pictured Left to right; Darren Craig Michaels Entertains At ‘The Nash’... On a very cold December night I ventured out to Albion Street WMC known locally as, ‘The Nash’. Although there were quite a few people in the club I was told that it was quieter than most Thursdays. On stage was vocalist/keyboard player, Craig Michaels, he was dressed in a smart black suit a black and white shirt and some really glossy shoes. He has a good strong voice and is very good on his keyboard; his stage presence is very good and he has a touch of humour in his act. Some of his impressive songs were Billy Joel’s, ‘My Life’, a reggae version of,‘Help Me Make It Through the Night’. There was a medley of Elton John songs and a Neil Diamond song, ‘Crackling Rosie’. A very good entertainer, Craig Michaels... I noticed that there are acts at the Nash on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays with some excellent artistes advertised... The George 5th club in Castleford was very busy on Wednesday night; it was the members Christmas party night, there were Christmas Crackers bingo and a quiz and a raffle. A great act on stage and a terrific atmosphere. The act was husband and wife duo, ‘No Contest’ Jason and Leanne Taylor are the happy couple. They were both immaculate on stage; Jason had a suit complete with waistcoat, shirt and tie; Leanne was wearing sequined tights and top with complete with a jacket. (Liked
The Boots).the harmonies were superb and the choreograph was a joy to see. The song choice was excellent, just look at what the did in their set. Cliff Richards ‘Devil Woman’, Cher’s ‘Walking In Memphis’, Rainbow’s ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’. Most people will know that Leanne’s tribute to Adele is excellent and she didn’t disappoint when she sang, ‘Someone Like You’. There were lots more songs in this 45 minute set finishing in style with Meatloaf’s ‘Paradise By The Dashboard Light’. Nicky James At "Gilly's!" It’s Nicky James at Gilly’s... Another good house at the City Club for Gilly’s Country Music Club. On stage was one of country music’s favourites, Nicky James; he was in sparkling form both with his singing and his guitar. A very good finger picker and accurate chords I have to say. His PA is first class and his choice of songs was just what the audience like to hear. Some of his songs though country reached the charts as pop songs too; the Marty Robins versions of, ‘Singing The Blues’ and ‘A White Sports Coat’, there were two more that fell into this category,‘Country Roads and Memories Are Made Of This ‘. There were more songs from the likes of . Pass The Point Of Rescue" by Hal Ketchum .."Tennessee Border" By Red Foley and "Cars " by Tom Wopat... yes folks, Nicky James is one of the very best.." Ian Tyler At The beverley Arms Ian Rocks The Beverley Arms. The artiste appearing at the Beverley Arms was Ian Tyler. Ian is an Elvis tribute artiste as well as his rock and roll songs. he is always well turned out, his voice is excellent as is his sound equipment. A sample of his songs are, ‘Every Day’, a Buddy Holly song, ‘And Then He Kissed Me’ by the Crystals. Naturally there were quite a few Elvis songs, ‘It’s Now Or Never’, ‘Lord You Gave Me A Mountain’, Tom Jones song, ‘Till’. Ian is a very good entertainer and I enjoyed every second of the set that I saw and heard...I have looked at his Web Site and his gig sheet is very impressive... In between Ian's sets, Andy Dunne the compere gave us a few songs. It's a great atmosphere at the Beverley Arms..... |
