My last call tonight was at, The Little Club With The Big Heart, Vickers Street Club in Castleford, on stage it's Johnny Steel, he was dressed in an all white suit, black shirt and like the shoes. Johnny has a fine voice, his first song in this the lasts set was The Real Thing’s; 'I Can’t Get By Without You', there had been lots of fun with the members before I got there. Some of Johnny’s songs were, The O'Jays, 'Love Train’, ‘Hold Back The Night', I love these, Motown medleys. there were other songs that weren't Motown, there was Sam Cooke's , 'Twisting The Night Away'. Al Wilson's 'The Snake'.'First My Last My Everything', (Barry White), 'Sweet Caroline' 'Feeling Hot Hot Hot’, this has been recorded by a few artistes. Yes folks, Johnny Steel went down well with the Vickers Street Members; in fact when Johnny appeared on stage in dark glasses, some of the members were sitting there with.... dark Glasses on. They do like a laugh in "VICKERS STREET CLUB". I couldn't blow the picture up anymore but I think you get the gist.... No Strings In Pontefract Sports And Social Club.
The act tonight was a Boy / Girl duo, 'No Strings'. They carry big sound and lights systems. They have a big screen behind showing videos of the acts whose songs they are singing. No Strings opened with a Trammps song,’ ‘Hold Back The Night', One by the Moody Blues, 'Knights In White Satin', Loved that one, Laura Branigan’s 'Take My Self Control', went down well’ No Strings have some good backing tracks in sync with the keyboard. The next song was, ‘Lost In Music', a Sister Sledge hit followed by, The Dave Clark Five’s, 'Do You Love Me', Journey’s, ‘Love Will Find you'. A good show from The No Strings Duo. The Prince Of Wales WMC was my first call tonight, on stage was Holmfirth singer Jonathan Redfearn. Very smart in a black suit, white shirt and dark tie, like the shoes, he has a fine voice, a lovely balanced vibrato and a good range. The first song I heard Jonathan sing was an early Drifters number, 'Dance With Me'. The one I thought was his best song in the set I saw was a Joe Longthorne version of 'We Don't Cry Out Loud', there was a Herman’s Hermits, 'There's A Kind Of Hush'. The backing tracks are very good. A few more of Jonathan’s songs were Dion's 'Runaround Sue', Status Quo, 'Rockin' All Over The World', a super variation of songs for the members who were joining in. The set ended with a Michael Ball song, 'Love Changes everything', an excellent set from Jonathan, he adds some well chosen humour into his sets. The POW has been having a facelift recently, the concert too floor is now carpeted and has been freshly decorated, and it looks terrific.. Tonight Sees Us At Lupset Wmc It's 37 years since we lost the KING Elvis Presley and the show tonight was dedicated to him. The entertainment is THE MIDNIGHT VEGAS BAND, featuring top ETA, Jim Santana. The club was very busy at 7-30 pm when we arrived. There were some audience members dressed like THE KING and there were quite a lot of the ladies dressed in the style of the era. The band line up is, on drums it's Paul, on bass guitar we have Pete, Bob is on lead guitar, on electric guitar and keyboards we have, Andy, Ben is on acoustic guitar with the beautiful Mandy on backing harmonies, tambourine, maracas and claves. On sound it's Dan Daly and on lights, it's Andy. The show opened with the overture followed by a rousing,'Don't Be Cruel', Jim was in great voice, The harmonies were superb, very tight as was the band. 'Blue Suede Shoes', 'Teddy Bear', obviously all the songs are Elvis Songs, so I will pick out some that 'I' haven't heard for some time like the the one Jim is singing now, 'Rock A Hula Baby'. 'O Sole Mio', 'His Latest Flame', 'Suspicion', from 1960. This is still the first half of show; there are a few costume changes to come, wow, a classy show. 'Viva Las Vegas'. When Elvis, (Jim), went off to change Andy and the band gave us Del Shannon's, 'Runaway', very good too. Well done Andy and the guys. Elvis, (Jim), re-appeared back on stage in a red sparkling Jump suit, a la Elvis Presley, like the shoes. I loved the medley of songs,'Don't Cry Daddy' and 'In The Ghetto'. The crowd joined in, 'The Wonder Of You'. The first half finished with an emotional song in the Elvis style, 'My Way'. In the second part of this very impressive show the band has a change of costume, blue shirts and Elvis, (Jim), into a white jump suit adorned with rhinestones; they opened with, 'C C Ryder', 'Let It Be Me', 'Sweet Caroline', with audience participation, this really got the crowd going, what an atmosphere. Here come the silk scarves as Elvis, (Jim), sang 'You Were Always On My Mind', (I still didn't get a scarf). Yes folks you gotta see the MIDNIGHT VEGAS BAND. Each and everyone of the band played their part all the way through the show the music was superb. The dancers are back on their feet and enjoying the music. The dance floor is now packed. A song I missed last night was, 'Steamroller'. Just another couple were, 'Way Down' and of course, 'American Trilogy'. Pat and I were only going to stay for the first half but we couldn't resist staying all night and along with our friends, we enjoyed the whole show... If you like an Elvis Presley Show. GO AND SEE JIM SANTANA AND THE MIDNIGHT VEGAS BAND.. The Quarry was busy tonight, on stage was Carn C Ryder, an Elvis Tribute Artiste, (No, Not the real Elvis). Carn was on stage when I arrived and was very near to the end of his first set, I arrived and had been on for an hour. 'Steam Roller', 'Polk Salad Annie', Walk A Mile In My Shoes', so I didn't see a great deal, what I did see and hear was brilliant, His stage outfit, his sound and the voice, as near as any I have heard and I've heard a lot. Whilst in the Quarry I met two of the band members in the new boy band, Lee Lambert and Tom,(Whose second name I missed, well it was busy and there was quite a lot going on. He and Lee sang a couple of numbers, 'Higher And Higher', and Cee lo Green's .Forget You'. Their harmonies and their individual voices are excellent. Pat and I are gong to see them in their band, LS ONE in the very near future. Looking forward to that. Wow, Alverthorpe WMC was extra busy tonight; it's the third Friday of the month and that's when the Scratch Band play here. That on its own is a good thing, the Scratch Band is a very popular draw; tonight there was a ukulele band too. There was a guy called, Kevin Batty, who has ridden his bike from 'ROME TO HOME', in 16 days and raising money for The British Heart Foundation. Kevin's partners father died due to heart failure.
John Stringer who was the sound man for many years was there as was Stan the Man, Martin Tagg, the Scratch Band's. drummer is unwell and couldn't appear, he was replaced by Big Time Charlie's drummer, Simon Hant. Martin Ramsden, Big Time Charlie’s frontman was there on keyboards. Some early songs were, Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow', 'The Road To Hell', and 'Country Comfort'. There were lots of musicians waiting to do their bit. A nice turn out tonight. Mick Larrad sang a song called, 'Born To Be Blue’. There was an Elvis song. 'Burning Love', lots of great music coming out tonight. I liked the one by Crosby Stills and Nash, called, 'Teach Your Children Well', ‘Up On The Roof'. The Drifters version. Good harmonies guys. ‘Handle With Care', 'When You Walk In The Room’. I missed the ukulele band but was told they were very good. I did hear them warming up earlier and I thought they sounded good. The amount raised for the British Heart Foundation was in excess of £300, very well done guys. Stuart Wade, Mick Larrad, Stephen Mounsey, Greg Hant, were the Scratch Band members tonight. It was good to see Graham of the Mid Life Crisis band take over on bass and singing a Beatles song, song, 'You're Gonna Lose That Girl', then we had Val Stringer on Banjolele accompanying Mick Linskey who sang, 'Folsom Prison Blues'. Well done Val, Blackpool Command 2015 Preview Shows

The entertainer tonight is a man I have lots of admiration for; Marty Lee, he has been solo, in bands, he currently sings in a duo with his son, Sam, he is on holiday just now. The duo is 'TWO SMART'. Tonight it's solo, Marty is always turned out well, very smart, good sound equipment. His opening song was, 'Quando', an Englebert Humperdinck song, his songs were the older songs , eg. Jerry Keller's, 'Here Comes Summer', that brought back some good memories from the 60's. David Alexandre's, 'The Answer', Tony Orlando's 'Bless You',. Marty is certainly pulling some old ones out tonight and I love it;(well I'm 72 ish you know) one from the Five Satins, 'In The Still Of The Night', recorded in the 1950's, another I've not heard for a while, Jimmy Jones, 'Handy Man'. Timi Yuro's, 'Hurt'. Marty appeared at the Blackpool Command show in a quartet, we had Neil Diamond's, 'Sweet Caroline', in which the members joined in. Another from the 1950's which was a hit for both David Whitfield and Frankie Laine, what was this one, (Competition Time)' Bobby Darin's, 'Dream Lover', A terrific performance from the one and only, 'Marty Lee', he finished this set with a song from the Sixties, Jay And The Amercans, 'Cara Mia'. Great stuff Marty... Morley WMC welcomed, Craig Michaels tonight, Craig is from the Morley area, looking very dapper on stage, as I arrived he was into his show and was singing Motown songs; he followed with an Elton John song, 'Daniel', this went down well. One I didn't know was called the 'Piña Colada', This was or is a song by Jimmy Buffett song, there was one of Elvis Presley's songs, 'All Shook Up', the concert room was a bit on the quiet side but more came in a little later. Craig finished his first set with a George Michael song, 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me'. He is very good on his keyboards and is a terrific entertainer. It was nice to see Gordon Kellet and his lovely wife, Joan having a night out. |
