As Gilly Says, "GERRIN' EARLY".
Gilly's CMC. Yet another full house in Westgate for the duo, Clear Cut, that's father and son, 'Don Binns on lead guitar and lead vocals, Darren Anthony on keyboards, guitar, piano Accordion, Mandolin and vocals. I liked the Frank Ifield song, original 'Lovesick Blues', a Merle Haggard song, 'If We're Back In Love By Monday'. Darren played, 'Il Silenzio on the keyboards. This was a hit recording for the late Eddie Calvert. 'Galway Girls', this is usually played for line dancers, so I am told. anyway it was a good rousing song. There was Willie Nelson's, 'On The Road Again' , 'Sweet Angelina Of Old Mexico', a Hoyt Haxton song and Hugh Moffatt's Old Flames'. Another great night at Gilly's CMC. The Nash. AKA Albion Street WMC. Another full house in spite of the weather; a change of artiste, tonight we had the gorgeous Beebi Del, she looked beautiful in a black, green and silver dress, like the shoes. A good clear sound and a clear voice, Beebi has an amazing range and lots of songs in her repertoire. There was Linda Ronstadt's, 'Silver Threads And Golden Needles', Alexandra Burke's, 'Hallelujah,' Take That's, 'Could It Be Magic'. Ralph McTell's, 'Streets Of London', Olivia Newton John's ,'Xanadu', Billy Jo Spears, 'That Old Fifty Seven Chevrolet', Petula Clark's, 'Downtown', 'Whitney Houston's, 'I Will Always Love You'. It was a nice surprise to see this lady, Beebi Del here tonight, singing as well as ever. It was also nice to see Leanne from Vickers Street WMC. It was also good to see The Cooper family, Mr and Mrs Cooper, Catherine and her boyfriend Luke. Catherineis also a singer on the clubs circuit, in fact you can see her here in the Nash on Friday this week, (16th August). Round the corner in Glasshoughton WMC,
I saw this band, 'Long Gone Daddy's at Gilly's CMC earlier this year. Three good musicians, good singers and the young man Phil Larry has a very near voice sounding like Lonnie Donegan, well it does! Some of the songs I heard from the band were. 'Gimme More Kisses, 'Stop The World And Let Me Off', a few artistes recorded this one including, Patsy Cline and Dwight Yoakum. There was a Hank Williams song, 'Your Mansion On The Hill', Kris Kristofferson's, 'Sunday Morning Coming Down'. This was one I liked to hear the great Frank Hepworth, (Heppy), sing. One by Jim Reeves, 'Railroad, Steamboat River And Canal'. One called, 'There Stands The Glass', sung by Phil Larry, who is great on guitar as is Phil Johnston on acoustic guitar and vocals, the double bass player is called Danny Clarke. There was a George Jones rendition of, ‘The Race Is On', and to finish the set was 'The Night Hank Williams Came To Town'. A very entertaining show from, Long Gone Daddy’s... Back in Glasshoughton WMC, to see the first set by AJ Jackson; I first saw AJ in a duo called Versatility. His sound is good; he dresses well for the stage and off stage too. I loved his opening music was a medley of dance songs. His opening song was the Killers, 'Human', AJ has a great raunchy voice and his voice lends itself to many genres of song. There were Cher’s. 'Walking In Memphis’ , Bon Jovi’s ‘Wanted Dead Or Alive’, one by Bruno Mars, ‘Just The Way You Are’, a Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons medley, 'Let's Hang On', 'Sherry Baby', 'Big Girls Don't Cry', 'Walk Like A Man', 'Rag Doll', followed by Billy Oceans 'Red Light Spells Danger'. To finish his first set and show his, VERSATILITY, AJ sang one from Les Miserable, 'Bring Him Home'. Hey, that was a superb version. AJ certainly entertains his audiences, I loved this set, dancers up already on the floor in this the first set.
Glasshoughton Club welcomed Joe Thomas, there were not a lot in the concert room but the lounge/games room was busy with Castleford Fans. Castleford had won the semi final of the Challenge cup against Leigh earlier today. Joe, though very young has a very powerful voice, he dresses very smartly, he has a good sound system. A few songs were from, The Kings Of Leon, 'Use Somebody'. One from Jekyll And Hyde, 'This Is The Moment'. Joe Is a great fan of musical theatre. His next song was Gary Barlow's, 'Let Me Go', there were lots more songs of varying styles. Well done Joe Thomas. The last song I heard from Joe tonight was a Michael Buble song, 'I'm Feeling Good'. Steve Adams was the act in the Prince Of Wales club. I was late getting there, (The weather didn't help). I did catch a couple of his songs though, one that was impressive was a Mike and the Mechanics hit song, 'The Living Years'. Steve looked smart on and off stage, he has an excellent voice which showed when he sang a Bobby Darin song, ‘Things’ and Van Morrison’s, ‘ Brown Eyed Girl’. I just loved his rendition of The Bee Gees; ‘To Love Somebody’ Great stuff Steve. On to the Ambience which is the new name or the Pontefract Ex Servicemen’s club in Pontefract. Lots of changes have been made in the club, it's looking good; quite busy tonight. On stage was that terrific singer David Bryden. Very smart, good sound equipment. Some of the songs I heard were, 'Ain't That A Kick In The Head', Dean Martin, Sammy Davis and others recorded this song, Madness’s, 'Welcome To The House Of Fun' and Elton John's, 'I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues'. Compliments were coming in to me about David's performance. He certainly knew which songs to choose tonight. A Message From Denis Collier..
