“Charity Night At The Vegas Sports Bar”.
What a night for your first charity show; Andy Appleton was optimistic that it would go ahead even with the terrible weather we have been having and he was right. I was welcomed at the door by Margaret who manages the club for Andy. Around 70/75 people turned up to support him. There were four acts scheduled to appear but only two were unable to beat the weather conditions. Dene Michael of Black Lace fame was first on the stage that Andy has built; there is an impressive back cloth and a good lighting system. Dene sang in his first set a medley of Smokie songs that included, ‘Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone’ and ‘Living Next Door To Alice’. In his second set he sang all the songs that Black Lace are famous for, ‘Superman’, ‘Agadoo’ and ‘The Music Man’ were just a few. Dene was travelling to London straight after the show for yet another show; I hope he had a safe journey.
Graham Pickles, (Aka Hank Muldoon) was the other act who managed to beat the elements; he was dressed in his hillbilly outfit and sang in his set ‘I Love The Sound Of A Whistle’, ‘Blue Moon Of Kentucky’ and ‘Folsom Prison Blues’. Two very good entertainers. Graham donated a DVD of a recent show at Batley Frontier club in which his band, The Muldoons appeared in their comeback tour. Dene was featured in the same show and makes an appearance on the DVD. Graham auctioned the DVD for charity which was on this occasion was the ‘Wakefield Hospice’.
Andy has booked some great bands for regular Saturday entertainment at the Vegas Sports Bar; it has a very good feel to it. There are lots of pool tables in this former Rex Cinema and Bingo hall. Andy is a former world pool champion. Every month there are television cameras there which sends pictures of pool matches all over the world. Andy himself is making his mark on American Pool these days. I wish him every success in his venture at the Vegas Sports Bar which, with his determination will be a great success.
Below are some pictures from the night; Left to right, Dene Michael, and again, Me and Mac Twice (He is 7 feet and 5 inches tall). and Graham Pickles, Twice, (Aka Hank Muldoon)
