Alverthorpe club was Very busy tonight for the visit of Martin Burton’s Soulmen. They always look very smart on stage in tuxedos, crisp white shirts with bow ties and patent leather shoes. Their backing music and their lights are first class. They opened their set with, ‘Ms Grace’ followed by songs from Gary Pucket and Union Gap, Edison Lighthouse, Sam Cooke, (I liked their rendition of, ‘What A Wonderful World). There were The Drifters songs in there, Ben E King’s ‘Stand By Me’ and many more. One song I hadn’t heard for a long time was Jimmy Ruffin’s, ‘What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted’, the harmonies and dance moves were top class; there was some comedy from Mick Barnes.
