The Nash Albion Street WMC, Welcomed Madeleine Roberts; The first song in her set was a Corrs song, 'Breathless', Madeleine looked good in a short black top embroiled in gold, like the shoes There were songs by The sound equipment is good and the voice is lovely. Her second song was a Queen Song, 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love ', a Steelers Wheel song, 'Stuck In The Middle With You'. There were many more popular songs for the members, Chubby Checker, Shania Twain, The Shirelles and a medley of oldies. They went down well. I liked the one from Amen Corner, Bend Me Shake Me', I’ve not heard this one for a long time’ A good set from Madeleine Roberts who finished her set with a Soft Cell song, 'Tainted Love'. Well done Madeleine Roberts...
Crigglestone. Club was quiet tonight, a sign that the festive is upon us, the artiste on stage tonight is a new one on me, a very smartly dressed guy, Motown singer, Dylan James. He has a good voice and a good repertoire, the sound equipment is good. some of his songs were, 'Me And Mrs Jones', a Billy Paul song. 'Just My Imagination'. There was a Sam Cooke song, 'You Send Me', and you don't hear this very often, a refreshing change. And now "Our Song" 'My Girl". A Bee Gees song was one that's special to me, 'To Love Somebody'. The last song I heard in this set was a Ben E King song, 'Stand By Me'. Well done Dylan James...
I called in Alverthorpe Club on my way home from Crigglestone; I called to say hello to one of the nicest duos in our clubs. Tabu. I Just sat and listened to some great harmonies and a few songs. Selfish of me but enjoyable. I was also able to have a catch up with a couple of friends I don't see very often.. Just a little Me Time. Halfpenny Lane Welcomes Carrie Michaels. This club has been staging entertainment on Sunday early evenings for quite some time now; today it was the glamour girl herself, Carrie Michaels. She looked beautiful in a Coral coloured cocktail dress, like the shoes which matched her dress. The decorations were wonderful too. Carrie opened her show in a Christmas style singing, ‘Winter Wonderland’ and ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’, the backing tracks sounded excellent. Carrie had the members in the palm of her hands from the start. It’s unusual to have a show in the tap room when there is a good concert room, this was being used for a children’s party. Carrie enlisted the help of three ‘volunteers’, to help with her next song, ‘Blame It On The Boogie’, the volunteers seemed to enjoy their part of the show. I had to leave at this point but I’m sure the members were in for a great time with the one and only, Carrie Michaels... I went next to the Horse Vaults in Pontefract, Gary Lane, the owner has a booked artiste, and tonight it was John Fitzpatrick, there were Karaoke volunteers, amongst them there were some excellent singers. One was a young lady called Stephanie Waters who has a lovely voice and sang Fairground Attractions, 'Perfect', another lady sang 'Drive', both these singers were very good. There was a guy there, didn't catch his name but he also was very good. The professional act who was in great form was John Fitzpatrick; he is very popular on the circuit. He pulled out some new songs, (to me); I loved his version of, Spanish Eyes’. The comedy was going down well. I spent a good hour there and enjoyed every minute.
News Flash From Gary Lane:- On December 16th at the Horse Vaults, an Elvis tribute act Kenny J, On Christmas Day its evergreen, ‘Steve Rose’, On New Year’s Day it's young vocalist Liam Kelly. By the way Gary tells me that this is the only Pub open in the town on that day... And on January 5th it's a MEATLOAF Tribute Show. Be there for some great entertainment. The Fox And Grapes Welcomed Nikki Rogers. I was in time for Nikki's last set, she looked great in a short black little number and. ‘Like the shoes’. Some of her songs were the songs of 'M People, 'Moving On Up'. Kerry Clarkson's, 'Beautiful Disaster'. Nikki has a lovely voice and a great personality, the Crystals were featured with, 'Da Do Ron Ron', ‘I Get The Sweetest Feeling’, A Jackie Wilson song, There was Lady Gaga's, 'Poker Face', The Shirelles, 'Will You Still Me Tomorrow'. 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love', was another by Diana Ross and the Supremes. A very good show from Nikki Rogers The Crown on Batley Road, Wakefield.
Here is where I met up with an old pal, Djdave Craig who is resident here, his first Karaoke victim, ‘er’; singer tonight was the landlady, Sarah who sang in harmony with Djdave Craig, the Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers big country music hit.'Islands In The Stream'; there were some great harmonies. Djdave Craig has some good equipment and knows how to use it. His second 'Victim' was Eddie who sang a Christmas song, 'A Winters', Tale That went down well. The landlord told me that bands appear here in the Crown. tonight it’s a Rod Stewart tribute singer and next Saturday it’s The Spirit Of Smokie. I will be calling in at the Crown tomorrow, Saturday lunchtime, for information. Tonight I went to Pontefract Sports Any Social club where they were having, nay, enjoying a recycled teenagers tea party. The engaged entertainment was 'THE POCKET ROCKET', Paul is his name, a very popular entertainer in our clubs. As always Paul was dressed for the occasion in his suit. He's dashingly handsome you know. (Paul's Words). Rocket and I were talking to one of the members, Trevor,(no not me), who told me about Josie and Mary who organised the party. Well done ladies it was a good spread.
Back to the entertainment, Paul's opening song was 'Do They Know. Its Christmas', the 1984 Version, (Bob Geldof's). This went down really well, they were up for all Paul's songs. He has recorded a Christmas CD, I played this when I got home, wow, it's brilliant and the artwork is special, it was designed by Paul's wife, Lisa. I'm not going to list his programme of songs enough to say, A great show', Pocket Rocket. I bought a couple of Paul’s CD’s and listened to some of the songs when I got home. They really are very good. Gilly's Traditional Country Club.
The Hanks At Gilly's. It was another full house tonight, The band had come on stage for their second set when I arrived, this a three piece band, all live music with two guitars and a drummer. The vocals and harmonies are excellent. Some of the songs I heard tonight were, 'Handle With Care', a Travelling Wilburys song .One by Chuck Berry, 'You Never Can Tell'. A Hank Williams number, 'Your Cheating Heart', A Web Pierce song called, ‘Slowly’, Eric Clapton’s 'Wonderful Tonight,' country style. Don Gibson's song‘ Sea Of Heartbreak’. I liked the Mavericks song, ‘Oh What A Crying Shame’ and one from the King, Elvis Presley, ‘A Fool Such As I’. Yes another success for Gilly’s Traditional Country Club were lots more songs from this band that went down well with the members. Look out for The Hanks Country Band Just to let everyone know next Tuesday 9th December, The Wakefield, Pontefract and District Concert Secretaries Federation are having their Christmas get together at Brookhouse Club, Barnsley Rd, Wakefield, with two fantastic entertainers Carrie Michaels, and Peter Kaye Tribute Jay Lee. its a free evening every body is welcome so if you have nothing to do come and join in the fun...
Albion Street WMC in Castleford, The Nash was as usual a busy place to be. On stage tonight, Hayley J. Hayley looked great in silver Sequinned top, overblack trousers, like the shoes. Hayley looks very much like Jane McDonald and she does sing some of her songs. She has a lovely strong voice, excellent sound system. Hayley opened her first set with a pat Benatar song, 'Hit Me With Your Best Shot’, one by Petula Clark,'I Couldn't Live Without Your Love', there was a song from the show, Dream Girls called, 'For One Night Only'. Loved this one; there were songs by Dionne Warwick, ('Walk On By', 'Do You Know The Way To San Hose', 'Say A Little Prayer’, and more). A real good performance from this lady of song. A special request for a Jane McDonald song went down well,'The Hand That Leads Me'. Her first impressive set ended with, a Bryan Adams song. Hayley and her partner Johnny Dee, are moving to Alcudia in Majorca for 6 months. Having done many fly backs they plan to stay there the full six months season and will be singinghere as Divas and Diamond . Have a great time guys. |
