The Nash, Albion Street WMC, was pretty busy tonight, the artiste on stage was a young man called Joe Hodgkinson who hails from Doncaster. He looked smart in a suit and shirt, his sound equipment was good. Joe opened his show with, ‘Run-around Sue’, this was an oldie by Dion, then we had, ‘Love Is All Around’, a big number one from Wet, Wet, Wet. Many more followed and Joe closed his set with a song from Les Miserable, ‘Bring Him Home’. Well done Joe.
I called at Glasshoughton WMC where there was a talent show going on; the show itself runs on until the Final on December 1st with £1,000 for the winner. Tonight my good friend Harry Turnstyle compered the show. He is very good at this. The first act on stage was Kerry Cormack, she has a lovely voice and opened her part of the show with an Etta James song, ‘At Last’. the song I liked for this young lady was an Elvis Presley song, ‘Love Me Tender’. The next act was a young man who played acoustic guitar. I didn’t really recognise some of his songs but he has a good voice and can play that there Geetar. One of his songs was an Oasis song, ‘Wonderwall’. Next please, this was another young lady, Jadie Sutcliffe who has a sweet voice. In her set she sang, ‘Cry Me A River’, in the Julie London style. Another was a John Legend song, ‘All Of Me’. After a short interval Harry Turnstyle opened with, ‘ Tainted Love’; He just loves this song. He went on to introduce a very smart looking Ryan English, he sang, Neil Diamond’s, ‘America’, that went well, another song in his set was, ‘Human’ a Killers song. The final act was another young lady, Azelia Lily, she too has a good voice, she sang in her set, ‘Hero’, a Beyonce song and Whitney Houston’s, ‘I Have Nothing’. Unfortunately I had to leave at this point. Going through to the next round, in no particular order; Azelia Lily, Keri Cromack and Dylan Brierly From the very first set, ‘The Urban Cowboys’, Billie Davies and Kel Britten, had the whole room singing and clapping along her at Gilly’s. Billy, from Glasgow, plays lead guitar, Mandolin and banjo as well as being lead vocalist. On rhythm guitar and backing vocals is Kel. Smart attire added to the stage appearance but as Billy said during the first spot, ’The coats are coming off’, well it was very warm. In the second and third spots the coats did come off but were replaced by … nice waistcoats. A few of their songs were, ’Hill Billy Highway’. and, ‘Galway Girl’, both songs written by Steve earl. One was called, ’Love Somebody Like You’, written by Keith Urban. All the songs were accompanied by some excellent backing tracks. No doubt this act will be back at Gilly’s Traditional CMC in the futures,… so, as Gilly Says, For ‘T Best Seats…. Gerrin early. It’s a big thank you guys for yet another full house!
The artiste tonight at Glasshoughton is Lottie T'Vay, she looked beautiful in a short dress, like the shoes! She had started her show when I arrived and was singing, 'Fame'. That sounded terrific, her next song was one by Emeli Sande, 'Next To Me', one of her songs was one I haven't heard for some time but I still like Alexandra Burke's, 'Hallelujah'. The members were enjoying Lottie's selection of songs and her performance. Coming up next was Kelly Clarkson's, 'The Heartbeat Song'. Do you remember the Stealers Wheel song, 'Stuck In The Middle'. That's another not heard for some time and the members were joining in that one too.Her last song was definitely a new one on me, 'Let It Go', this is very popular right now, it's called, 'Let It Go'. Loved it, this was Lottie's last song in the set and the members were enjoying her very much, Remember the name, 'Lottie T'Vay'.
My first call is in The Prince Of Wales club.
This is where Brian Cliff and I usually join up for a chat. The artiste on is Ian Tyler, I mis - read the poster this week but no matter, Ian is a good 'un. He always looks good on stage, casually smart and tonight is no exception. He moves well, in fact he is never still. Ian opened up with an Elvis song, 'Heartbreak Hotel' followed by a medley of Elvis Presley songs; a really powerful opening. There were Roy Orbison songs, Elvis Costello songs, there was a surprise for me when Ian sang a song that both Elvis and Peter, Paul and Mary recorded, 'Early Morning Rain'. There was Bobby Darin's, 'Dream Lover'. I like Ian's set tonight, very different from the last time I heard him. There was a Neil Diamond's, 'Sweet Caroline'. A very good set Ian; he closed with a great Eagles song, 'Desperado'. Townsville Miners Club is just a short drive from The Prince Of Wales. WMC, I called in this club to see my friends John and Sharon Fitzpatrick. John was on stage into his second set when I arrived, he was singing a Garth Brooks song called, 'The Dance', a lovely song. There were songs by, Tony Christie, Gene Pitney. John ended this set with a song by Danielle Merry Weather called, 'Red'. I like the song and the guy who is singing it right now. Morley WMC. September.
Wed 2nd. Thomas James. Wed 9th. Steve Andrews. Wed 16th. Ajay Jackson. Wed 23rd. Danny Tetley Wed 30th. Hayley J. It is with severe regret that we have to announce the death of Mick Larrad, former guitarist and vocalist with The Scratch Band. Mick had been with the band for several years and played at the band's last official gig in February, at the Admiral Duncan. He was unable to play or attend at the 'Last Scratch' gig in July due to his illness. Mick was a fine guitar player and an excellent vocalist. Our condolences go out to his wife Linda, his sons and his daughter in law. He will be sorely missed. |
