I have worked in some excellent theatres in my time and tonight I am here to
write a review for the Hull Daily Mail Star Search at the magnificent Hull New
Theatre. The stage is really big and the dressing rooms are superb..
The compere tonight is Dave Norman who has compered this show for many years now. His lovely wife Vicky; looks after the sound and lights systems. The show started at 7 - 20pm with the Calvella dance troupe; an excellent opening..
The first act was a duo from Pontefract, Holly and Matt, they looked great in
their stage attire, the voices gelled in the song ,'When You're Gone' a Bryan
Adams hit. Good voices and note perfect harmonies.
Next up,was a young lady I saw here in Hull last year, Grace Christiansen,
she looked lovely and sang and played to an acoustic guitar a Simon and
Garfunkel song, 'The Boxer', she changed from guitar to electric piano; she played
this with some passion. well done Grace...
Anya Rawlings was the third act up, she was dressed in a long white gown. her
voice is very good. 'Diamond Are Forever' and 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina'
from the musical. "Evita", A good performance from Anya.
Dylan James dressed in.smart suit shirt and tie. The background video was
good, from the 60's rock and roll dancers, both his songs were unknown to me but
Dylan sang them well, what a great voice.
Sam Arkut, singer / guitarist who sang 'Here Comes The Sun', Sam has a good strong voice and I'm sure he will do well in the future.
Next up was Barnsley girl, Beth Reddy, looking radiant in a long sequinned gown. Beth has a super voice, her first song was, 'The Show Must Go On', to sing a song like this with so much movement needs a radio mic, part way through her song the cable separated from the mic. Beth quickly picked up the lead and replaced it without missing a note. Her second song was, 'I Have Nothing', well done Beth.
John Luke Bacon was next, he sang a rap song, don't ask me what the song was, I
just don't know but the crowd were enjoying him... He did sing a Neil Diamond
song ,'Sweet Caroline', in his inimitable style and had the crowd on his side.
-Only one word describes JLB, WOW !
Opening the second half was Dave Norman who sang, 'When You Tell Me That You
Love Me'.
He introduced a trio called, 'Raw Kadence', this trio is one girl and two guys.
One guy on guitar and vocals with the other guy on a beat box and vocal
harmonies finally a young lady on vocals. The first song was, 'Breakfast At
Tiffanys' and one of their own compositions, very good guys,
Next was Katie Parsons, a lovely young lady with a very powerful voice, I loved he stage outfit, her first song was, 'One Night Only' followed by another I didn't know but whatever it was called I think this young lady has an absolutely fabulous voice. I was told after that the song was called, 'Show Me'.
Next was a young From Priory road, Dean Wildbore, he looked great in a blue
and white suit, he sang, 'The Answer',. Dean has a lovely voice with a good
range, he reminded me of a comedian from the old days, Arthur Miller. Dean did a
change on stage to a bright red pair of trousers and a whites, a la Meatloaf, he
did sing, 'A Bat Out Of Hell' with a video of bats on the screen behind him. He
even came on stage with a "Motorbike'This was bathed in coloured lights. (It was
a mobility scooter). A Very interesting act..
Timeless was the next act, two young ladies one in a red dress and the other one
a blue dress, in keeping with the name of the act they sang, 'In The Mood', one
called 'Sing Sing Sing and a couple more in a medley. 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy'.
A very different act. I loved, 'Putting On The Ritz'. Brilliant. I would like to see Timeless in an old time show.
Jade Scott was the next act, she was dressed in a wet look short dress. Jade has
a lovely voice which has a nice lilt in there. The song she song was, 'Going To The River', Jade's second song was another I didn't know. But it was very good.
The next act was a trio called Euphoria, they sang an En Vogue song called, 'Don't Let Go'. I'm almost certain one the girls is Sami Lou, they went on to sing a song I didn't get the title of but it sounded good. Brilliant Harmonies. An excellent quality of voices and note perfect harmonies.
Performing a guest spot was Emmie Craft, the winner of the 2024 Junior Star Search sang a song called, 'Hi Ho', I Hope. There was another that demonstrated Emmie's excellent range. 'That's Alright'. I'm sure Emmie will be competing in the senior section next year and will be strong competition.
Just before the judges verdict we had last years senior winner, Callum Scott who
came to sing a couple of songs. He has obtained lots of work since his win.
Just waiting for the result now, I'm ready for me bed.... Here we go ...
In third place it's.... Jade Scott..
In second place it's ... Raw Kadence...
And in first place it's ...... Drum Roll ....
GRACE CHRISTIANSEN .... Well Done Grace...
