The New Trades And Labour Club in Doncaster was by busy when I arrived today with the artiste for the afternoon, John Fitzpatrick. Well now, going back to the days of the Jim Windsor in Leeds back in the 60's and 70's, I have never seen such a distance from the car park to the stage. By consolation a young man with a cart appeared and transported the equipment to the stage for us. I mention this to show just how helpful the people at this club are...
John looking very smart, opened his show with his Matt Monro signature song, 'How Do You Do'. This went down well. John carries some excellent sound equipment and knows his way around it. 'Hey up'!, the dancers are on their feet dancing to a Billy Fury hit, a Sir Cliff song followed. I liked John's version of 'Quando Quando Quando'. By this time the dance floor was very busy with people of all ages, great to see them all dancing. ' She's Like The Wind', was a new one from John, that I've heard. Showaddywaddy's, 'Under The Moon Of Love'.
In the second set he sang some good old rock and roll and still the dance floor is full. Three was Bill Haley's, 'Shake Rattle And Roll'. Neil Sedaka's, 'Calendar Girl', Chris Farlowe's, 'Out Of Time'.There's still plenty on the Dancefloor, I think they're sving their places for the final set.
John was asked to sing a couple of Matt Monro songs, he obliged with, 'From
Russia With Love' and, 'A Portrait Of My Love'. Now back to the dancing although the dance floor is full again. The dancers just loved his version of Gary Barlow's, 'Let Me Go', The Back Street Boys were next, (not the real ones)'. The Dave Clark Five. We had a Dave Edmunds song and one from
The Honeycombs. More from Cliff. I think john has done great job this afternoon. To finish his very exciting and impressive show he sang a Sam Cooke hit from 1962, 'Twisting The Night Away'. Yes an excellent afternoon and to give that finishing touch, 'Along comes the lady with the cart'.
Curtis Lee was here in the trades this afternoon, I hadn't bumped into him for a good few years; he looks very healthy. Curtis is still be on the circuit, I just heard him sing a few lines along, a Bobby Vee song. Yep, he can sing.
Also in the club was a good friend from Crigglestone, Bernie Boult who himself is a singer of good repute. I did see a few more I knew but not by name... They did come and say hello... What a super afternoon...
