A new one for me, the Nash on a Friday night to see the second set from Carrie Michaels and Jeannie. Both looked good in their stage attire. Jeannie is great on the harmonies. The first song was a Shirley Bassey song, 'Get The Party Started', that went down well.he next song was, 'This Is My Life', another Shirley Bassey song. One especially for Mr T was, 'Three Good Reasons'. Wow Carrie, you just get better love. There was a nice medley of sing a long songs and the crowd loved them. Blonde was feature with 'Heart a of Glass', 'Call Me', a very different version of 'Hey Jude'. Carrie closed the set with another Shirley Bassey song, 'If And When' This was terrific but then that's Carrie Michaels.
It's Friday night in Ladybalk Social club. The artiste tonight is the lovely Nikki Rogers, looking glamorous in her stage attire, a red and and black top over black shorts, (like the shoes). Nikki opened her set with,'I Just Can't Get Enough', a good lively opener, next was a Tracy Chapman song, 'Baby Can I Hold You Tonight', Nikki has a lovely lilt in her voice; looking round at the audience, they look to be enjoying Nikki's performance. 'My Girl', was the next song, there were songs from the shows, this next one from Dirty Dancing, 'Hungry Eyes'. Nikki has just spent some time in hospital suffering from pneumonia, she has done well to be able to perform tonight but then she doesn't like to let the club's down. A Jackie Wilson Northern soul track was next, 'Sweetest Feeling'. I have enjoyed Nikki's show and am now going to sit back and enjoy the rest of this set. The sound system is very good with the bass at a perfect level, beautifully blending with the rest of the sound. Well done Nikki Rogers.
Tonight I attended the showcase at the Pontefract Sports and Social club, Yes here I am in sunny Pontefract. The compère is, Jane Tracy. She opened the show with, 'Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow'.
The first act Jane introduced on stage was Rebecca Daniels, she looked good in her stage attire, like the shoes. Rebecca has a good strong voice. She opened her set with, Emeli Sande's 'Next To Me', 'You Can't Hurry Love', amongst others. There were the songs of Sam Smith, Whitney Houston, Queen, Rebecca closed her set with a Leona Lewis hit song, 'Run', well done Rebecca Daniels. Next up it's, 'The Moode', a four piece band with songs from all eras, Their first song was, 'Things We Said Today', a Beatles song. One from the Byrds, 'Mr Tambourine Man', WE liked the Procul Harem song, 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale', I used to play this many years ago with the Dean Stanton Four. There was a Manfred Mann hit song from the early 60s, 'Pretty Flamingo', there was a souped up version of the Shadows, 'Apache', my friend and Stacey liked, 'Gypsy Queen'. One from the Kinks showed their versatility when the sang, 'A Dedicated Follower Of Fashion'. Clearance Clearwater Revival's, 'Have You Ever Seen The Rain'. A good selection of material. Well done The Moode. Jane returned to the stage to sing another song and introduced, Rob Johnson with his 60's show with the help of a screen. The first song was a Dave Clark song, 'Glad All Over'. With film of the said band on the screen. Running into a song called, 'Lazy Sunday Afternoon', By the Small Faces, The Mamas and Papa's were featured singing, 'California Dreaming', Rob is pretty good on guitar, his next song was Do Wah Diddy' a Manfred Mann song. The last one I heard was the Safari's, 'Wipeout', I liked that one, it brought back lots of memories for me. The final act of the night was, Wayne Simon. He opened his set with 'Mony Mony'. His stage attire was smart in a black suit, white shirt and tie, like the shoes. I didn't get to hear too much of his show but he seemed to be doing ok. It was nice to have my friends, Stacey and Steve sitting with me. Even if she was doing all the actions and joining in the lyrics of Bruce Channel's ,Hey Baby... The next Concert Secretaries Federation Showcase is on the 30th of July at Halpenny Lane, Pontefract, WF8 4BW Is the venue and date for the next Showcase. Phew! Isn't it Hot tonight, here I am in the Albion Street WMC In Castleford, (The Nash)'. Which was very busy. Tonight's entertainer was an old friend, Jonathan Carroll, he was in fine voice and looked well in trousers and a shirt, looking real cool on stage. Jonathan has a good strong voice and chooses his material to suit his audiences. He opened his set tonight with, 'Sending Out An SOS', this was followed by, 'Let The Music Play'. It's been a long time since I heard JC as we call him, he has added some good tracks to his repertoire. The next was soul song called, 'Ms Grace', followed by, 'Something Old Something New' . We used to do lots of shows together a good few years ago in the clubs and in the Wakefield Theatre Royal; we had people like Charlie Williams, David from, Heartbeat and not forgetting, Lee Lambert who is doing well for himself and many of clubland favourites. There was a song from the Stylistics, 'I Can't Give You Anything ', a Spandau Ballet was featured with the song, 'Gold', one of JC's favourite songs. Many more that were well known, I now just sit back and enjoy the rest of the set.
Glasshoughton WMC On. Monday Night. The club was very busy, as always. Tonight we have the beautiful and very talented Laura Magann who was wearing a long sequinned dress; with a matching tiara: like the shoes, she has a superb voice and choose songs for everyone. The first song was, 'Bye Bye Blackbird'. The next song was an Edith Piaf song from 1952' 'No Regrets', sing in both French and English. Next was another from the '50s, 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy'. All the choreography was there. One from Petula Clark in the 60s, 'I Couldn't Live Without Your Love', wow, Laura is sure in fine voice tonight. I love the well controlled vibrato in her voice. Next was a Cilla Black song, Laura is singing songs from the era's that are not heard too often, the emphasis is there for all to hear, often called light and shade. I loved the Mama Cass song, 'It's Getting Better', this lady, Mama Cass that is, passed away at the age of 33, what a great loss to music. I don't normally like to hear ladies sing this next song but Laura changed my mind tonight when she sang, 'Nessum Dorma'. This is one from the show Evita, guess!!!! Oh ok then, it's 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina'. The final song in the set was a Whitney Houston song from, The Bodyguard, 'Run To You'. What a fabulous performance from Laura Magann.
The Prince Of Wales Club, Nevison, Pontefract.
The club isn't very busy at around 8pm but it does fill later. On stage tonight is guitar / vocalist Andy Lee Marsh, I have seen and heard him in n other occasions but it's been some time. Andy came on stage in a dark suit looking very smart, the sound system is very good and the voice is good too. Andy's first song was a Searchers song, 'Needles And Pins'. One I've not heard for a few years was a Byrds song, 'Mr Tambourine Man'. The sound system could be stored in the boot of my Panda. I haven't seen speakers as slim as these, the bass bins were on the small side too but the sound coming out of them was good. Andy is an excellent guitarist. Next was a song by The Mersey's was 'Sorrow'. Other songs by the Hollies, The Searchers, Lindisfarne were all featured in Andy‘s repertoire. A good show from Andy Lee Marsh. A mad dash took me to Morley's Ackroyd Street club to meet a gentleman Iv'e not seen for a few years, Steve Richards who was a top liner in his day, unfortunately due to illness he had to take a break from singing. Hopefully he will be making a come back sooner rather than later. Well now I'm here I'll mention the entertainer on stage tonight, it's the man himself, John M Fitzpatrick who was going down the proverbial storm with the members. |
