Hull Daily Mail Talent Trail Semi Final…
Friday May 6th I was on the judging panel for this prestigious competition in the Freedom Centre in Hull; a superb venue; a big stage with top class lights and lighting operator, a good sound system operated by Dave Norman’s wife Vicky who has been with the competition for 15 years. Dan Foster, Martin Jones, Ken Hopton and Rena Jordan were my fellow judges; Hull Daily Mail senior reporter Emma Wright was videoing the show.
There were nine acts hoping to reach the Grand Final at the Hull City Hall.
In order of appearance the acts were Max Bayston who has a fine voice; Max sang ‘Somewhere Thinking Of You’. James Lent made a dramatic entrance on stage singing, ‘Cry Me A River’. A good spot from James. Compass is a four piece acoustic band they played original songs which were quite good.
Olivia Oxton a very tall and attractive girl caught my eye; she has a soprano voice and looked glamorous on stage, Olivia is destined for a career in the musicals; she sang a great version of ‘Love Is A Many Splendored Thing. Marie – Marie is a mother and Daughter duo, their voices and harmonies blended well, their stage wear is good. They sang ‘Rule The World’ in Italian.
Holly Ansell sang ‘Summer Of ’69; Make You Feel My Love and Time To Say Goodbye’. Another very strong voice. Jessika Mae was dressed in a beautiful long evening gown; she has a wonderful voice and knew how to use it. She is really at home on a stage. What a singer one of her songs was Adele’s ‘One And Only’.
The second band on the show was the Hollybeats four piece ‘60’s band. They sang in, ‘Not Fade Away, Please Please Me and Get Yourself Together’. The final act was the stunning Ashleigh Taylor who has a great voice and looked wonderful in her stage outfit, It was a short lace dress, [I Think} Loved the shoes… Ashleigh sang, ‘Rumour Has It, and Somebody To Love’, yes, with the long high note at the end. Although she didn't make the final I think Ashleigh has a really bright future if she sticks at it...
Wow, what a show; we had to choose two from these 9 acts to go on to the Final at the Hull City Hall. The two chosen acts were; Marie – Marie and Jessika Mae… Good Luck in the Final …
