Wakefield’s Crigglestone Club Presents:-
The Crigglestone WMC concert room was very busy on Friday night, [August 19th] where the Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly tribute shows were on stage. Opening the show was a guy, Dave Wickenden who stars in the West End, [London] production of the ‘Buddy Holly Story’. Dave looked and sounded like the great man. He was very smart in a stage suit, white shirt and a bow tie; patent shoes, oh and the Buddy Holly glasses finished the great look. Obviously he was singing Buddy Holly songs which included all the top hits and some not quite so well known. ‘That’ll Be The Day’, ‘Oh Boy’, ‘Everyday’, Listen To Me’ and the rest. What a show from Dave.
Next on was the Roy Orbison part of the show with Alan Morris as Roy Orbison, complete with guitar a smart stage outfit and the trademark Dark Glasses. ‘s son Andrew is on keyboards and certainly knows his way around them. On bass is J,J, Gray, again an excellent musician and on drums, ex Crigglestone drummer of 37 years, Colin Dack. On guitar and narrating the Roy Orbison story it was Tony Lawton who also does a very good Johnny Cash tribute.
The Roy Orbison story included all the hits as one would expect, ‘Only The Lonely’, ‘It’s Over’, ‘Running Scared’, ‘Love Hurts’ and all the rest. He even included songs from the Travelling Wilbury’s ‘Handle With Care’
The Johnny Cash part of the show was equally entertaining with, ‘Ring Of Fire’, ‘I’ll Walk The Line’, A Boy Named Sue’, ‘Orange Blossom Special’ Texas and many more.
“Roy Orbison” came back with a few more songs and even an Elvis song was thrown in for good measure, well Roy Orbison was a friend of Elvis. A couple of songs that stood out for me were Roy Orbison’s first ever recording, ‘Oobie Doobie. And number one for me, ‘A Love So Beautiful’. A super show at Crigglestone to kick start a great weekend of entertainment celebrating its Centenary year…
In the Roy Orbison picture is a different drummer. Colin Dack joined the band on this mans retiremnent.
