Rosie Doonan is the hostess at an Open Mic night at the New Inn which is in Walton near Wakefield; this happens on Wednesdays. Lots of her friends bring their guitars, violins, concertinas and there is always a keyboard available. I have heard Rosie's voice on numerous occasions and never tire of hearing her. As you will see from her picture she has recently recorded another CD which I can tell you is superb. Why not go and have a listen to Rosie but be early because there is always a queue of singers etc who want to "have a go"..

She looked beautiful as always wearing a black sequined trouser suit. Carrie announced to the audience that she is having a baby boy early next year. She opened her set with .Run' and followed with 'The Boy Does Nothing. Carrie is a much sought artiste for the Cruise ships and as a presenter in top venues; the Club Tropicana in Chapel St. Leonards comes to mind. More songs from this lovely lady were, Have Yourself A Mery Little Christmas and (One in Italian) That's Amore. All Carrie's songs were cleverly linked making it a truly professional show. It’s Back To The Future.
It was very busy at Alverthorpe Club in Wakefield on Boxing Day, (Sunday); The act on stage was Back To The Future, are a very energetic trio and as Chairman Kevin Laird said, “You’re Kna... (I think he meant tired), just watching”. How right he is; Lisa, Jo and Sammi J take the audience from the pure beginnings of "Pop" music in the 1950's, through each decade to the present day. It's a theatrical ride with live sounds of the hits from each decade from Artistes such as Ike and Tina Turner, Dusty Springfield ,Martha Reeves and Lulu from the 60's to Gloria Gaynor, The Trammps and Donna Summer in the 70's Back To The Future soon had the Alverthorpe members singing and clapping along. What and energetic show. Lisa told me that they lose around 4lbs in weight after every performance; they must have to eat plenty to put that back on each day. What a show. In the audience was ‘Billie’ Shepherd and family who enjoyed the show; Billie is the sister of Zoey Shepherd, (Now Larkins). Zoey is now married and we hope she will come back to the clubs circuit... Pictured left to right:- back To The Future, Lisa and Billie Shepherd. Tara’s Five Star Performance. Lofthouse Gate WMC was busy on Christmas Eve when the lively young singing Star Tara was the artiste on stage; she looked fantastic in a strapless short black little number. Her voice was good and her choice of songs were equally good. The members loved her from song number one which was Lulu's Shout, she followed with lots of very popular songs, I was impressed with her final set when she sang quite a lot of up tempo Christmas songs, I enjoyed Tara’s ‘White Christmas’. She was certainly a hit with the Lofthouse members. On January 6th Tara and Kath, her mum, will be flying off to New Zealand and I know she will be missed by her friends and family, I know Pat and i will miss her. Kath will be there for three weeks and Tara between 6 months and a year. Club land will be the poorer without this beautiful young artiste. Very Busy At The Lupset.
What a superb atmosphere in the Lupset Hotel on Horbury Road, Wakefield; on stage was the fabulous family band, ‘BeardSmith’. Neil, Gary, Graham, Ged, Alice and young Gillan; all stars in their own right, brilliant musicians and great singers and harmonisers. All are multi-instrumentalist and good entertainers. It’s My Life, Eye Of The Tiger, Romeo And Juliet, Here I Go On My Own and especially for Mr T, The Devil Went Down To Georgia. Where do they go from here? Well they have a new manager who is sending them all over the place; not surprising seeing as the won the GMTV family Band competition and everyone wants to see them. Don’t miss out of they are in a venue near you. Pictured top to bottom; Graham, Gary, Ged, Neil, Alice and Gillan. It was Gilly's CMC Christmas Show tonight with The Collier Dixon Line on stage. We had a great night with these guys. Chris, Mags and Melvin prepared a great buffet. The Country Music Club has really taken off despite some terrible weather to contend with. I'm sure Chris will want to thank everyone for their support. See you there y'all. The Collier Dixon Line was on great form. Lots of humorous moments, a well presented band and some great country songs tha included, Snowbird, A Picture Of You, (The Joe Brown Version), A lovely rendition of Silver Wings was the one that did it for me. A smashing couple from Barnsley were there for the first time, Jimmy Alexander and his wife Dee. Gilly welcomed them and I had a nice chat with them. The next show is on Tuesday January 4th 2011. The music they play is strictly from the 1960’s, nothing before and nothing after. Pat and I love this music. The line up is, lead vocals and guitar, it’s Brian, on bass it’s Mike, Rod plays the drums and Jeff is on lead guitar. The guys all really do enjoy their job. Some of the covers were Joe Browns, ‘A Picture Of you’, gene Pitney’s, ‘I’m Gonna Be Strong’ and there were songs from The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Elvis was there, so was Gerry And The Pace Makers. What a show with dancers in the first set. Look out for the Brian T Strollers 60’s band. The Vocaltutor Christmas Show.
This was a show produced and presented by Georgina Hill-Brown at Westgate Common Club on Thursday night, (December 16th. Appearing on the show were, Emily Atkinson, Carla Tagg, Helena Starz, Aimee Barratt, Danielle Atkinson, Shannon Mares, Phoenix, Chloe Gadd, Jess Pinder, Ellie Hill-Brown, Naomi, Mary Thompson, Rachel Skelton. The only boy on the show was Joel Wright. There was a lady called Jay who I think should be already working as a professional singer. In fact Jay did sing up to a couple of years ago and I hope she is considering a come back. I could pick out plenty of good voices; there were certainly no bad ones. I did like Helena Starz version of ‘Oh Holy Night’ which was very moving. Helena, Rachel and Jess are the trio ‘Finesse’ who appeared in a show for the Polio Fellowship at Crigglestone recently. I would like to give Georgina Hill-Brown and her husband William a hearty pat on the back and a great big thenk you from their students for the hard work they put in. A good night of entertainment but where were the members? They missed a fine show from these young singers. The Lupset was quite busy on Saturday night when the Scratch Band presented their Christmas Party; Stewart, Mick, Mike and Martin were on form as they performed all the songs that the people there asked for. There wer some quiz questions, (I won a prize), There was free food, lots of laughs and some great music. Volunteers were, former Scratch Band lead guitarist, Steve Mounsey, Stan The Man, Matt the Fish Man and one Mr T. It's thank you from me, (Mr T) to the Scratch Band for the music and friendship over the years and for keeping the music LIVE, It's always a great night of entertainment with>>>>>>>> , "THE SCRATCH BAND"... Today at The Lupset Jim Santana appeared in his Elvis tribute show; this was the third in Mick and Sue's Christmas Fayre shows; Jim looked great in a white Elvis style Jump Suit adorned with rhinestones. Viva Las vegas, that's Alright Mama, and an excellent medley of Elvis early years songs. The diners were well looked after by the staff in the Lupset as the were served with a lovely Christmas lunch. The tables looked superb and a couple of the diners told me, "It was fantastic". and on Thursday 23rd it's that great family band, BeardSmith. Friday 24th, (Christmas Eve) it's Mick McGinley with his Disco/Karaoke Show.Bring in the New Year with Sully's Heroes. On Saturday the 1st from 6pm there's a Fireworks Display and Bonfire, Pies and Peas etc. I don't know about you but I think Mick McGinley and his lovely wife Sue are doing a great job at the Lupset; They too deserve a big pat on the back. As most landlords will tell you, it's not an easy job running a pub! Pictured below are Finesse, Georgina Hill-Brown, The Scratch Band, Sue and Mick McGinley and Jim Santana... |
