Why can’t it always be like this? a full Batley club. It's been opened and closed two or maybe three times in the past few years; now a business man has bought the club, I hope he can keep it going; there was an opening show there tonight arranged by entertainer, Dave Hill. The club was very busy and I only hope it continues in this vein. There were quite a few entertainers giving their services free and I hope gets some support. Big G was the show compere and he introduced acts like, Leanne Tetley who sang a Licence To Kill, Craig Michael sang some great Reggae songs, John Fitzpatrick who included an hilarious Sex On Fire, Dave Hill sang a duet with Craig Michaels. I left when it was half time so I didn’t see Danny Tetley. In the audience were acts like Graham Stevens, Tony Styles, Aiden Jay, the legendary Tony Wayne and many more. Ashley Wheelhouse was the sound man
During time I have been reviewing artistes and shows I have often been asked what I did to qualify me critisisng entertainers. Well I think the above picture tells most of my life in music and entertainment.
I don't consider myself, "Qualified" but I love music and the entertainers who perform today and those of yester year. I will continue with my reviews, 'Mr T Reviews'. until I am no longer able... When I retired from my day job after over 40 years as an HGV driver, I did a skydive in aid of the Wakefield Hospice raising lots of much needed money. The Wakefield Theatre Royal Shows raised Thousands of pounds also for the Wakefield Hospice. The only thing I would say to my doubters is, If You Don't Like My Reviews, "Don't Read Them".
Lizzy Brown
Glasshoughton Club was busy again tonight when I arrived; I was there early to get a good seat, too late, there were lots of people already there. On stage tonight was a lady I have seen a couple of times before, Barnsley lady, Lizzy Brown. She has a good strong voice with a terrific range, a good PA and knows how to use it. I had a chat with Lizzy who is much taller than I am, (Stop It!!!). She told me that she has worked in Tenerife. Lizzy opened her show with an Adele song, ‘Rolling In The Deep’. I liked her stage attire, a bright orange dress adorned with silver accessories, (Lts). More of her songs were by, Cher, Shania Twain, Corrine Bailey Rae, Abba, Randy Crawford and Jessie J. A nice mix to suit her audience, Lizzy Brown.
John Fitzpatrick... One of the fun moments...
A fair crowd was in the concert room to welcome John who was making his first appearance at the club; he was dressed very smartly, his sound system is excellent and his voice was on form. John opened his show with a Matt Monro song, ‘How Do You Do’, which went down well; John moved around the club shaking hands with the members. More of his songs were covers of, Tony Christie, Elvis Presley, Dave Edmunds, Engelbert Humperdinck, Marty Robbins, Rita McNeil, ‘The Working Man’, (which was requested again in the last set), Joseph Locke, Neil Sedaka and even a Chuck Berry song, (hence the 'guitar').There were many more songs and lots of humour in the show, (No jokes on here). I’m sure John will be invited back at Crigglestone club in the future... I have been asked to announce that regetfully, 'The Darts Exhibition' with Eric Bristow and Dennis Priestley, scheduled for Friday, August 30th has been cancelled due to lack of interest. Despite the heavy rain tonight, Pat and I enjoyed our Saturday night out; our first call was in Westgate Common club where there was a double bill with Mexborough vocalist Ella J and the Sharpe Experience.
I saw Ella a few weeks ago in a Castleford club. She looked lovely in a short purple dress and (Lts). Some of Ella’s songs were by Diana Ross, ‘Showaddywaddy‘, Diana Ross, Candy Staton and the one I liked best, the Mary Wells song, ‘My Guy’. A good performance from Ella J… The Sharpe Experience are Rob and Paul, twin brothers. the timing between them is excellent; the crowd were with them from the first note of their opening song, 'I'm Into Something Good'. the comedy is very good but you will have to go and see them working together. ' Stuttering Bum' was one of their songs which went down well. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> The Admiral Duncan was quite busy tonight. The band playing tonight was really something; the band is John McSeverny band, ‘Underdrive’. Three musicians, John McSeveney on lead guitar and lead vocalist, Tim Gillespie on drums and vocals with Tom Johnstone on vocals and bass. There were some of the songs that were familiar in sound but thanks to help from my friends I got to know some of the artistes and some of the song titles. Some were by the Beatles, David Bowie, Kylie Minogue, Gnarls Barkley, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Roachford, Steppenwolf, Norman Greenbalm, Eddie Cochran and Buggles. The Buggles song is an old favourite of mine,‘Video Killed The Radio Star’. Yes folks, a super night for us…More pictures coming... Ricky Graham Leisure Audition, a busy club, four acts and lots of great friends in the building; wow, what a night I had.
The first act on the show was a three piece Rock A Billy Band called ‘The Memphis Cruisers’, all the way from… Leeds. A superb double bass player and lead singer, a great rock and roll guitarist and a super drummer. They opened with a song called, ‘Flying Saucers’ and went on to sin, ‘Folsom Prison Blues, ‘Rock Around The Clock’, and one called,‘Jump Jiving Whale’. The bass player is only 16 and he really can play that double slap bass. A Brilliant opening from The Memphis Cruisers… Next was ‘Jimmy McLean’ from Baildon he plays a great guitar and boy can he sing. ‘Take It Easy’, an Eagles song, Chris Rea’s, ‘Road To Hell’. I and many others loved his version of Gary Moore’s,‘Parisienne Walkways’, Just brilliant. There were many more from this versatile entertainer, ‘Jimmy McLean… Milli Simpson from the Morley looked good in a black sequined dress, (Lts).. Milli has a good strong voice and opened with Dion’s, ‘Run Around Sue’; she also sang the songs of Connie Francis, ‘Stupid Cupid’, Petula Clark’s ‘I Couldn’t Live Without Your Love’,Elton John’s, ‘Your Song’ and Adele’s, ‘Make You Feel My Love’. Well done Milli. The final act was a young lady from Upton, Becky ‘J’; she looked good in a multi coloured dress, Ltb… Becky has good strong voice. In her set she sang a Tavares song, ‘Heaven Must Be Missing Angels’, the O’Jay’s, Love Train’,Jimmy James and the Vagabonds song, ‘I’ll Go Where The Music Takes Me’, The Corrs, ‘Breathless’, There were quite a few more but thank you for singing Mrs.’T’s favourite Status Quo song, ‘Rocking All Over The World’. Another excellent night at the Willows Social club in sunny Pontefract… More Pictures To Follow... Oct Showbar.
