I called in The Nash in Castleford, where there was a full house which is normal on Tuesday nights. On stage was a lady called, K-Dee. She looked lovely in a multi coloured sequined dress, (Ltb). K-Dee carries a good sound system and has a good strong voice... some of her songs were by Bruno Mars, 'Marry Me', Stevie Wonder's,'Signed Sealed Delivered', Take That's, 'Rule The World' and The Foundations, ‘Baby Now That I Found You’, ... I Liked that one the best...well done K-Dee...
I called in Westgate Common Club for Gilly’s Country Club night where Father & Son duo, Clear Cut were the engaged artistes. Don, (dad) is the guitarist and Darren is the keyboards player, he does play guitar too. And excellent sound system and there were some great harmonies. Some of their songs were, ‘Copperhead Road’, by Steve Earl, ‘Silver Wings’, a Merle Haggard song, ‘Il Silencio’, an Eddie Calvert instrumental on keyboards, (Very impressive that one Darren) a Don Williams song, ‘My Best Friend’and Don Gibson’s, ‘Sea Of Heartbreak’. Another busy house for Country Music at GILLY'S CMC...
Next Tuesday it’s local favourite, Dave Bryan.... Don’t be late, Dave always attracts a good crowd...

Not my usual destination on Monday night but I felt a change coming on. The club was busy and the artiste on stage was the magnificent, Full Fat Funk duo, with Jason Halliwell and Marina Scotney; they both looked great in their stage outfits, Marina in a short dress adorned with long tassels,(Lts). Jason was dressed in a rock musician style? It looked great anyway. Their music and singing was, (to steal a phrase from Jon Dean), ’Awesome’. The first song was a Queen song, ’Don’t Stop Me Now’, that was as Jon said, yes it was ‘Awesome‘ there were songs by Take That, (The Flood), Fleetwood Mac’s ’Dreams’. Marina took the lead in Emeli Sandi's, 'Next To Me'. there was Gerry Rafferty's ‘Baker Street’. Jason's saxophone skills are wonderful as is his guitar playing. I mustn’t forget Marina whose voice is lovely and her harmonies are, Class. I liked every song, every note but the highlight for me was the John Miles classic, ’Music’. how Jason gets those high notes is a mystery to me, his range is incredibly and as I said to Jon Dean, ’ Jason puts his own stamp on his interpretations of every song he sings…I give you… Full Fat Funk The Alpha Club, Hemsworth.
I was made aware that this club has started booking artistes again so I called in to see for myself tonight. On stage to entertain a pretty near full house was guitar / vocalist Derren Boulton who was dressed in a rock style outfit. His PA is good and he has a good voice too. Derren sang in the set I saw a couple of Stevie Wonder song,‘Very Superstitious and Isn’t She Lovely’, ‘Rosanna’ and the best one for me was Eric Clapton’s. ‘Wonderful Tonight’. The Alpha has recently reopened after a refurbishment and it’s looking good. Entertainment is provided by the Dukeries Entertainment agency. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alverthorpe Club. The club was on the quiet side in the concert room. I don’t know why this should be because on stage were Steve and Claire who are ‘Red’ and look good in their stage attire. Good music, PA, Lights and a projector with lots of different effects on there. It was the dance set when I arrived; some of the songs were by, Enrico Iglesias, Celine Dion, Steppenwolf, The O’Jays, Cher and a great medley of songs from the 60’s and 70’s . Another top performance from, ‘RED’... Stu Page Born 12th May 1954 Stu Page was a guitar legend, not only inYorkshire but worldwide. Stu started to realise his love for music as early as ten years old. His grandmother had a drapery shop in stanningley nr Pudsey and further down the row was “Mrs Dickinson’s”, Sweet shop. Here he got the “real deal” as she had a piano and this is where Stu started to plonk. Then as Stu says this is when the Beatles and the 60s influences came in and he had to have a guitar. Before this Stu names Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis as some of his early influences as he listened to these on the light programme and home service.... The forerunners to radio 1 and 2. (Showing his age now eh?) When Stu got his first guitar, his father being an engineer thought the thick strings were the highest ones so it was straight back to the shop for new ones. Till he realised... No help there then? So this led to Stu being self taught. His first band was at the age of ten with his long time friend and school chum Bry Thomson and called 'Grit', dealing mostly in early Rock & roll music. In 1973 Stu got heavily involved with the country Music scene after being asked by an engineer on radio Leeds if he could back a band from the States named The Warren Wilkinson Band. This lead to Stu emigrating to America where he played a lot of the college circuits. When these gigs dried up, as they did in the times when colleges where on holidays, he joined a soul band on the New York northern seaboard with other famous musicians out of Vanilla Fudge. He moved back to England eventually and formed Remuda which was the forerunner of Stu Page band & Stu Page & T.C, (Terry Clayton). The Stu Page Band included Andy Whelan and Peter Shand. With this band they appeared regularly on C.M.T (country music television)and won best band of the year awards three or four times and numerous other awards and accolades all around Great Britain and Europe. As a country picker Stu as worked with artistes such as Kris Kristofferson, Ricky Skaggs, James House, Jim Glaser, Billie Jo Spears, Gail Davies and Carl Perkins to name a few. Stu has also produced albums for The Haleys and country favourites Iona & Andy... Turning to country rock Stu formed a tribute band called the B-Eagles singing and playing the songs made famous by the Eagles. The band included his school mate Bry with Andy welan, Colin Gibb and Ian Hawkings. This band toured the lengths of Britain to some accolade until they split. When asked what his favourite gig was Stu says “My best gig i would say was Queen Beatrice birthday in front of 30,000 people, but also enjoyed the Albert Hall and The Palladium and worst gig ...a place in Doncaster one Christmas when we were asked to played Jingle Bells ..Refused and got payed off !!!! (Humbug !) Stu played in and around Yorkshire with his band The Wild Hogs (www.wildhogsrockandroll.com). This great band consisted of Bry Thomson On guitar and keyboards, Tom Page (his son) on bass, Roy Whyke on drums.Yorkshire “Born and Bred” Chris (Gilly) |
