Gilly's CMC, (Held in Westgate Common Club), was unusually quiet when I arrived tonight; on stage was local country band, Back In The Saddle. I sure enjoyed their songs. There was a Johnny Cash song I know, 'Forty Shades Of Green'. The lead singer in the band is Frank Kelly and the drummer is 'Big Ian' who doubles on Washboard. John who plays lead guitar also plays a mean mandolin as they play a song called 'Baton Rouge'. There was a Hank Williams song, 'jambalaya'. the last song was a Hank Williams song, 'Setting The Woods On Fire'. The last song tonight was, 'Wonderful Tonight'. Appropriate I'd say... It did get busier when the artiste came on stage, the entertainment is a young lady from the East Coast, Carolyn Clare; I saw this young lady a few weeks ago in Castleford, She has a lovely voice and a good repertoire. Carolyn looks lovely. In her stage attire, a long black dress, like the shoes. Her opening song was, "Fever', I seem to remember this from some years ago being sung by Peggy Lee. The Temptations 'Get Ready', was her second song, loved that one... 'Tainted Love', a Marc Almond and Soft Cell hit from a few years ago. Songs by Erasure, the Real Thing, ‘You To Me Are Everything’. ‘Heart Attack’ and ‘Footsteps On The Dance Floor’. A nice and entertaining set from Carolyn Clare.
The act Next Sunday act at the POW is Karl Cooper. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>. Tony Styles In Ossett Central Club. Tony looked casually smart in a dark shirt and razor creased light grey trousers, (LTS). Tony has fine voice and often sounds like his idol, Tony Christie. He opened his dance set with an Elvis Presley song, 'A Little Less Conversation', an up tempo version of, 'Little Ole Wine Drinker', great track Tony, next on the menu was a Tremeloes song; 'Here Comes My Baby ‘Daydream Believer', a Monkees hit, written by, Neil Diamond. It's been some time since I saw and heard Tony, I loved his show. More artistes featured were, Sir Cliff Richard, Roy Orbison, he had the dance floor buzzing. I liked his Motown songs; one was by the Pasadena’s 'I'm Doing Fine'. A good show, Tony Styles. Yet another entertaining show... The Admiral Duncan was fairly busy tonight when we called, on stage was York Band, 'Flash Back', who were in full flow. They recreate the music from Liverpool's famous Cavern. There was some great sounds of the Beatles, of which they are noted for. There was The Big Three. They played Woolly Bully for the dancers, recorded by Sam The Sham and the Pharaohs, Written by Kenny Lynch. The Beatles, already mentioned were heavily featured in their very impressive show. There was a Chuck Berry hit, 'No Particular Place To Go', and a Small faces song, 'All Or Nothing'. There were lots more songs from the 60' s. A terrific show from 'Flash Back'. No I didn't get all the songs and the bands because I was enjoying the music, OK?...
Duplicate's Finale. Pat and I saw the final performance of Katie - Jo and Lee tonight in Westgate Common WMC. They have had a great run but alas, for the clubs, they have decided to close the curtains on the duo. Lee is a school Teacher and has been promoted to a higher position, I wish him every success. Katie, I hope will continue entertaining us with her lovely voice for some time, it would be a shame if she didn't. There were very few cars outside but the club was busy. Duplicate opened their first set with 'Dancing in The Street', both Katie and Lee looked great in their stage wear, ' like the shoes'. The second song was, James Blunt's, 'You're Beautiful'. The harmonies were excellent; some of the songs were by, Take That, Billy Ocean’s, ‘Love Really Hurts’ , Clubland will surely be the poorer without Katie & Lee. Two great entertainers. Adele's 'Make You Feel My Love' came next after a presentation of a multi photograph frame with of pictures of Duplicate through the time they had been together. Thank you for your version of the Four Tops, 'My Girl' which, I may have mentioned before, is ‘Our Song', (Pat's and Mine). A Diana Ross song followed, 'When You Tell Me That You Love Me', a great rendition guys and a super though emotional first set...In the second set their songs from the show, Evita, Take That, 'Under The Boardwalk', by The Drifters, Willie Nelson's, 'You Were Always On My Mind'.'Baby When You're Gone', a Mel C and Bryan Adams . Very appropriate. The Third Scratch Band Friday night at Alverthorpe WMC,
As well as the band performing there is an open session where people can volunteer to sing or play an instrument, (No Recorded Music,) and it seems to have taken off well. When I arrived tonight they already on stage doing their stuff. The line up was a little different with guitarist Mick Larrad recovering at home from an operation, so they replaced Mick with another Mick, Linskey and Martin Ramsden, both former band members of the Scratch Band. Nice sound and 6 great musicians playing. What more could you want; a few of their songs were by, Steelers Wheel, Elvis Presley, Elton John, The Travelling Wilburys and the Hollies. I'm just waiting for the victims, sorry, 'Volunteers', part of the show because there is a bit of a twist in proceedings. I had a nice surprise when they sang Gary Barlow's latest recording, 'Let Me Go'. A Searchers song,'Have You Ever Seen The Rain'. Another Searchers song was, 'When You Walk In The Room'. It was good to see Wakefield's own Elvis, Jim Santana, Stan The Man who sang his party piece 'Doctor Doctor'. Jim Santana did sing a few of Elvis's songs including, 'One Night' and 'Blue Suede Shoes'. The Scratch band sang some county song that included Johnny Cash's, 'Folsom Prison Blues'. Mick Linskey played by the guitar, harmonica, saw and anything else he could put his hands on, well accompanied by Steve, Greg and Stuart on guitar, Martin Ramsden on keyboards and Martin Tagg on drums. The surprise on the night was when Mick played ‘Edelweiss' on his musical saw. this guy can do almost anything in music. Another good night with the Scratch Band... Don’t forget folks, The Scratch Band are here in Alverthorpe WMC, Every Third Friday Of The Month. Come and give your support, PLEASE... FLASH BACK AT THE ADMIRAL DUNCAN, 100 THORNES LANE, WAKEFIELD. SATURDAY MARCH 22ND AT 9pm. SOLICITORS, FRIDAY MARCH 28th 9pm. THE SOLICITORS.
Rycroft Club Show Case.
Very late getting there tonight, the club was very busy for this agents showcase which was compered by comedian, Jack the lad. He is quite a comedian, no jokes from here folks. Jack had introduced a boy girl duo, No Strings. The girl has a very strong voice and the guy is good on harmonies. Just caught one of their songs, 'Lost In Music', quite a good duo. wish I could have seen more... The next act was a young man I have known for many years, he is Joseph O’Brien. Very smart in suit shirt and tie, a good voice; some of his songs were, 'Signed Sealed Delivered I'm Yours, onto a motown song, 'Sugar Pie Honey Bunch', 'Just the way You Are', a Bruno Mars song; a good set from Joseph O'Brien . The final act was another boy / girl duo, ’Dead Ringer’s, they are a very different Meatloaf tribute act; in fact their opening song was ‘Dead Ringer for Love'. There was, 'Paradise By The Dashboard Light', 'I Would Do Anything For Love’. Well done Russ and Sooz; a terrific act. Cameo In Morley WMC.
This boy / girl duo was looking good in their stage attire, two good voices and an excellent sound system. They went straight into, 'Proud Mary', 'Forget Me Not', 'Somewhere In My Heart'. A very good start to their show, all from the 80's. the harmonies are good; John on guitar is good and on vocals it's Gill who has a very good and powerful voice. One from Yvonne Ellerman, 'If I Can't Have You'. The sounds of the 70's and 80's were well received by the members, Morrissey was featured with, 'Native New Yorker', and I haven't heard that for a while. The backing was absolutely terrific. I really enjoyed this duo, very lively and look happy in their work. I would recommend them for most venues that like a varied programme. They ended the set with, 'The Rose’. Well done 'Cameo'. who are from the Sheffield and Rotherham area. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>><><><><><><><> The Fox And Grapes welcomed Freshly Squeezed. Tonight they were dressed in short sequinned dresses. Like the shoes, a few of the songs I heard were, 'Sounds Of The Underground', 'Teenager In Love', 'Love Machine, 'Build Me Up Buttercup‘ and 'Penny Arcade' and yes it went down well, There was lots of comedy and a 'Victim' from the crowd. Lots of fun from Freshly Squeezed who are Little Sam Lyons and, Miss 'T'. Freshly Squeezed ended the set with the Killers, 'Human'. Naturally I am not going to reveal their comedy 'antics', enough to say they were hilarious... |
