Alverthorpe Club was a very busy place tonight; the artiste booked was that super duo, Seaside Rendezvous. One half of the duo, Jeff, was unable to appear due to illness, Donna rang the club to explain and said if she wanted she could do the booking as a solo act. I’m very pleased she did, Donna has a very strong voice a good PA and lights. Her show is described as a, ‘Naughty Show’. I am not going to repeat any of her jokes but it's enough to say that Donna was very funny and the members loved her, well done Donna. A couple of her songs were, ‘I Would Do Anything For Love’ and a really nice version of,‘The Impossible Dream’. What a terrific all round entertainer...
My second visit was at the Open mic night in the Vine Tree pub on Leeds Road, Newton Hill, Wakefield. After the rugby on television, Dave Tennant and David Tattersall entertained on guitar and keyboards. They play lots of covers from all earas. It’s open mic every Friday at the Vine Tree. Call in and give a song or give the impressive menu a good look. There are some delicious meals on there at reasonable prices...
Second Journey In Ladybalk Recreational & Social Club. There was a nice crowd in the club tonight when the Second Journey duo was the entertainment. Two well presented guys in dark suits, black shirts and red ties; Lts. David and Jamie have wonderful voices and the harmonies really are top notch. I turned up just in time for the first set in which they sang songs from the 1950’s, Marty Wilde’s, ‘Teenager In Love’, going through the years with Bruno Mars, Cee Lo Green, Elvis Presley, Erasure and lots more. The guys have a pleasant presentation and lots of smiles. But where was Donna, (David’s wife) who is quite a character... I had a chat with Malcolm Cunningham who, along with the committee really are striving to keep this club afloat. The much advertised talent competition has been cancelled due to lack of interest. The senior competition was for unsigned and freelance competitors with a first prize of £500... I was looking forward to that one. It would have been a good night out... Tonight I had a ride to Albion Street WMC, (The Nash) in Castleford. The club was reasonably busy and on stage was a lady called,‘Maxine Santanna’, the daughter of Carlo Paul Santanna. Maxine looked good in a short black skirt and a pink sparkly top; (Lts). Maxine has a nice voice and chose songs to suit the audience. There were songs by Tiffany, The Foundations, Herman’s Hermits, Showaddwaddy, Chris Montez and Chris Montez. The song that brought back many happy memories for me was the Skeeter Davis song, ‘The End Of The World’. Well done that lady, ‘Maxine Santanna’.
Whilst in the club I had a chat with Blackpool Command Show producer, Brian Cliff, (who incidentally won on the bingo), Brian told me that the tickets for this year’s show are completely sold out as they were last year and the year before... I’m looking forward to my weekend in Sunny, (I hope) Blackpool... The concert chairman Peter was in fine form tonight... 9/10 Peter... Star Search At Westgate.
Not a packed house for the competition but there was a reasonable crowd turned up to see four acts vying for a place in the quarter finals. Compere` Stuart Eden opened up with a lively song and a few one line jokes. He is fast becoming popular with the Westgate crowd. Stuart introduced the first contestant, Eddie ‘Vee’, a new one on me. Eddie was dressed in a blue suit and white shirt. He opened with an Elvis Presley song, ‘If I Can Dream’; this was followed by the songs of David Essex, a few from the Beatles and Bryan Hyland finishing with Roy Orbison’s ‘Crying’. Next was a young Pontefract girl called Holly Barker who I met Holly in a recording studio last year; she was involved with recording a CD for the Prince Of Wales Hospice. Tonight Holly accompanied herself on acoustic guitar. She sang some of her own compositions which I thought were very good. After a short interval Stuart opened with Andre Bocelli’s song, ‘The Prayer’, that was wonderful Stuart. There was a collecting bucket on the stage for donations for, 'Help For Heroes'. He introduced a young lady to the stage, Beth Reddy, from Barnsley who has just performed her first two club engagements. She looked really good in a short multi coloured dress compete with the sparkle, Lts. Beth opened her set with ‘At Last’, wow. She certainly did that song well, Beth followed with a good selection of songs finishing with Tina Turners ‘Proud Mary’. The final act tonight was a young man from Fairburn Ings, near Pontefract; Ricky Star is the name; very smart in a dark suit with matching tie and a silver waistcoat. Ricky has a good voice and likes to tell a couple of jokes. A couple of his songs were, ‘Right Here waiting’ and ‘Oh What A Night’. And it was... As always only 3 contestants can progress to the next round and they are.... Holly Barker, Beth Reddy, (Brookes) and Ricky Star... Tonight!
Westgate Common WMC 5, Park Grove Road, Wakefield. WF2 8TW IT’S STEVE PAIGE’S STAR SEARCH WITH FIVE GREAT ACTS AND COMPERE, STUART EDEN... Saturday, March 9th...
Well here we go again after a bout of a heavy cold I was “Allowed” by Pat to go out tonight... You see folks, some of us do take notice of our wives... Our first call was at Sharlston ARLFC. The club was a bit quiet at first but came to life at 8-30, just in time for the first set of a lovely two girls duo, “MadKatz”. The duo is Madeleine Roberts and Katalina, two excellent singers and dancers who can harmonise really well. The sound system is good and they know how to use it. From the very first to the very last song both ladies had lovely smiles. They were dressed in short black and gold dresses over black tights and Ltb... Some of the songs we heard were, ‘Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This’, ‘Twisting The Night Away’ and a lovely ballad called, ‘I’ll Stand By You’. I just loved the harmonies in this one. There were a few dancers but at the back of the room, (Shy or what)? So folks, if you haven’t yet seen MadKatz, look out and check out... they’re good... This was my first time of seeing MadKatz and what I saw I liked... Below; Exclusive Pictures of MadKatz |
