Friday March 2nd, it’s Touchwood; Local Band, Songs from all eras...
Friday March 9th it’s Paul Somers Memories Of Elvis Show... Friday Night Out…
My first call was at the Horse & Jockey in Horbury Bridge; the place was positively buzzing with the Scratch band playing for Pat’s birthday. Over 21 she tells me, well I KNOW she is a t least 37.the Scratch band was on form and a couple of the songs they played were, ‘Another Tequila Sunrise’ and‘Alberta’. (I like that one very much). There are lots of top artistes coming to the Horse & Jockey in the coming months... Check it out Guys... I moved on then to the Hammer & Stithy in Ossett; I don’t always know who the artiste is there but was pleasantly surprised when I saw Active Edge, (By Request). Linda and Steve have a super rapport with the ‘Stithy‘customers. There is always a great atmosphere when they play there. Linda told me recently that Active Edge will only be on the circuit for one more year which is sad because they are very popular on the circuit. Their equipment is excellent and their harmonies are very good. Steve is reverting to his Hypnotist act as Steve Allan. I wish him well... My final call was at the Wakefield City club; on stage there was a duo called Sonyx, a multi instrumental duo. Two super voices and a good mix of songs. The lady in the duo is Janine who has a powerful and lively voice, the male half is Brian who also has a great voice and both sing solo and in perfect harmony. Some of the songs were, Cher’s ‘Believe’, Shania Twain’s ‘Man I Feel Like a Woman’, Marc Almond’s ‘Tainted Love’ and Millie’s ‘My Boy Lollipop’. You should check out this super duo… Sonyx... The Willow Social Club on Baghill Lane, Pontefract is where the Ricky Graham Leisure Entertainment Agency hold their monthly audition nights; it is usually the last Thursday of each month. This Thursday I saw 4 acts. The first was a 6 piece band called,’ A Little Something Different’; this was made up with an elderly lady on keyboards and lead singer, two guitars, (lead and Rhythm), a bass guitar, a drummer and a maracas player. Some of their songs were, ‘River Deep, Mountain High’, ‘Gimme Some Lovin’,’My Heart Will Go On’ and ‘Rocking All Over The World’. If nothing else they entertained the audience...Good for you lady and guys...
Next was a young man from Keighley called John Michael; he has a good voice with a good range, was dressed casually smart and a good sound system; some of his songs were, ‘Higher And Higher’, ‘Human’, ‘You Gave Me A Mountain’ and a rap song called, ‘Angel’ by Shaggy. A very good set… Next up was an attractive two girl’s duo called, “Candi Bliss” ,(Phillipa and Ann). They were dressed in a type of leotard, stockings and suspenders, a la Madonna (I think). Anyway there were two good voices and the harmonies were very good. Jesse J’s ‘Price Tag’, Rhiannon’s ‘Without Love’, a couple of Motown songs and finishing with the Noisettes, ‘Never Forget You’. A great mix of songs and good introductions to their songs too. I really enjoyed their set… The final act was another young man from Keighley; Ryan Williams, he was very smartly dressed, he has a good strong voice and good sound equipment. Some of his well chosen songs were, ‘All Time Low’ by the Wanted, ’Ed Sheeran’s ‘The A Team’ and Roy Orbison’s, ‘Pretty Woman’. Another good set. It was good to see a few clubland entertainers in the room having a good night out… I enjoyed it too… Awaiting Pictures from the acts... This Is a report from Tara's employers in New Zealand Highlighting the success of Tara a top rated singer / entertainer in our clubs.
Quantum Education employee Tara Watson was in top form as she and her band performed at the Marchwood Blues Picnic earlier this month. The event held for the last 6 years has drawn a bigger crowd each year and is becoming a ‘must do’ on the national music calendar. Around 800 people revelled in the live music including the young and old, with sunny weather the day was a huge success. The event draws a number of key note musicians including Midge Marsden, Brilleaux, Chris Gunn and Gunshy along with Quantum Educations very own Tara Watson lead singer of The Big Bang Theory. Tara is an extremely talented singer, originally from the UK, she has been in New Zealand for over 12 months. While singing is one of her passions she also has a degree in Education and has worked as a Teacher Aid in New Zealand but recently took on the role of Programme Accreditation Co-ordinator at Quantum Education Group. From the team at Quantum Education we would like to warmly welcome Tara to the team and look forward attending some of her gigs as well. Steve Rose What a great voice Steve Rose has, he was the first of the Wednesday night artistes at the Red Lion, the pub was fairly busy and the landlord, Tony Anderson was happy. I hope this takes off for him, the aim is for singers to bring their disc along and, ‘Give us a song in the interval’.Steve was dressed casually smart, his PA is very good and in his set he sang the songs of, Adele, Shirley Bassey, Englebert Humperdinck, Tom Jones, there were a couple of Motown songs in there and others. I was most impressed with his Roy Orbison songs. I believe Steve could do a Roy Orbison tribute show. Gary Lane was DJ/Compere for tonight. Next weeks artistes, the 29th of February is evergreen guitar vocalist, ‘Jimmy Echo’. To all you singers out there who like to give a song; just turn up at the Red Lion and let Steve know you are there, (Don’t Forget Your Disc). More artistes coming to the Red lion are:- on March 7th, Top Duo, Soul Provider, 14th it’s ‘Danny Tetley’, a great Singer/ Entertainer, 21st it’s Top Comedian/ Singer, Johnny Martell and on the 28th local lady and lovely vocalist, Lucy Jackson is your entertainment. Come and give Tony your support. it was a Full House last night at Gilly’s CMC! No surprise there, as the band playing was The John Aston Band featuring Ken Durrands on Bass And vocals, Derek Thurlsby (C'est La Vie) on lead guitar and pedal steel with of course John on rhythm and lead vocals. "I Still Miss Someone" and "Sweet Dreams Of You" were just a couple of songs John performed with perfection helped along on pedal steel by Derek, what a superb musician. Ken is also known in his hometown of Doncaster as the voice, very apt too as songs such as "The Race is On "and "The Love Bug Told Us Why”. The song that John just about ended a near perfect night with "The Old Lamplighter " which John put on an album in the late 70s, Recorded at a studio in Wakefield; the sound technician at that time was the late Richard Whiteley of "Countdown" fame. John put the band together for Gilly as a favour as he was looking for a band for that particular night. It may have been a one off and may never happen again but you never say never in this business; I think as everyone agreed "What a great Night". The club was very busy and it was Monday night; on stage was singer/comedian and drag act Stuart Eden who was in cracking form. He has one hell of a voice and the jokes and one liners just flowed from him. Some of the songs were, ‘It’s Only Love’, ‘Knock On Wood’, ‘Celebration Time’, ‘Have I Told You Lately That I Love You’, that one was really good, ‘Moonlight And Strangers’, a new one on me but very good, ’Make You Feel My Love’ and finishing with Adele’s, ‘Make You Feel My Love’, in his own style. Stuart did his “Sabella” drag show in the middle spot which unfortunately I was unable to stay for; I have seen this before and it is ‘Hilarious’. Thank you for some great entertainment Stuart Eden... |
