Ah well folks, the Admiral Duncan is closed for a refurbishment but the brewery don’t want Dawn to go back when it’s been completed; the woman has done her best to make it go. We were in the ‘Duncan’ for the last time tonight with regulars and friends of Dawns’ having a last drink with her and her staff; there were a few tears and we said our goodbyes but true to her nature Dawn said, “Watch This Space”. Is there something on the horizon we don’t know about? Well we will have to “Watch This Space”. Whatever she does I wish her well...
Westgate Common WMC was extremely busy for the visit of The John Taylor Band from the North East, near Redcar. The band is top quality with five great musicians on stage; the harmonies are note perfect. The lead singer is of course John Taylor who, as one lady who knows her country music said, could hold his own in Nashville, I agree Mags. The lead guitarist, Tony, is amazing and his voice on the harmonies is really tight, the excellent bass man is Tom and the drummer is Lee; both top dollar. I do know the keyboards, guitar and piano accordionist, Darren who plays in the duo, Clear Cut. I was there with some friends, Sharon and John to catch the second set which they opened with a song called, ‘Woodstock Nation’, followed by, ‘Natural Born Lovers’, ‘Young Man’s Town’, ‘Free Fallin’ and ‘Lost My Chance’. The song I really loved was Ketty Lester’s, ’Love Letters’, well sung John... I really must mention the floor show from 'Dancer', Sheila who was both entertaing and so funny... You really must see the John Taylor Band if you see them billed anywhere near you...
Tony Munroe In Albion Street WMC [The Nash.]
The Albion Street Club was again very busy last night, (Tuesday) when the artiste on stage was Barnsley’s Tony Munroe. He looked very smart in a dark suit and white shirt. Tony has a fine voice, a good sound system and a super personality. Some of his songs were, ‘Love Is In The Air’, ‘Blueberry Hill, ‘Let Me Help’, there were the songs of Tom Jones, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Dean Martin and many more. Yes folks, a good entertainer and a smashing guy too... Tony Munroe... I mustn't forget the chairman on the night> Yes... that's Peter... The Teri Sullivan band appeared in Harry’s Bar in Wakefield on Monday night. I had dropped in to say hello. It was a job getting through the doors with the place being so busy. The band line up is Teri on guitar and lead vocals, Andy Whelan on lead guitar and harmonies with Graham Kearns on bass guitar and harmonies. I just heard one song which was a Smokie song but I will probably catch up with them on Wednesday when the Teri Sullivan band will be at the Boot & Shoe in Ackworth... Glasshoughton WMC welcomes Kevin Anthony... I saw Kevin a few weeks ago in Ossett Central club and liked what I saw and heard; a man with a superb voice and well dressed. Well Kevin Anthony keeps his standards high. The club was reasonably busy when Kevin took the stage; he opened with John Paul Young’s,‘Love Is In The Air’, a great opener. He sang an Andy Williams song that I haven’t heard in years, ‘Almost There’ and the Malcolm Roberts song, ‘Love Is All’. A brilliant entertainer who is also a David Alexander tribute singer... Well done Kevin Anthony... Gilly's CMC Presents...

19 High Street, Crigglestone, Wakefield, WF4 3EB... My first call tonight was at Crigglestone club where I had planned to see Blackpool Singer/Comedian, Dave Betton. Unfortunately Dave is ill in bed with influenza. Not nice...
In Dave's place was a superb entertainer, Steve Richards; a very snappy dresser on stage; he has a lovely and powerful voice and sings lots of styles of songs. Steve opened his show with Billy Fury’s, ‘Jealousy’. There were songs and sounds of Neil Diamond, ‘Crackling Rosie’, Dean Martin, ‘Memories Are Made Of This’ and Bobby Darin, Elvis Presley, Andy Williams, Roger Miller and many others were in there and this was just the first set. Steve chose his songs after looking at his audience. His PA system is very good. Steve Richards, excellent singer and entertainer... On to Ossett Central club where, on entering the club I was told about the former secretary of the now closed Fern House club, Keith 'Sandy' Sanderson, who was found dead at home. R.I.P. Sandy. On the stage I saw a new face to me, Dave Ross from Wigan. He was smartly dressed in a dark suit and shirt. He is a fine singer/comic though he doesn’t actually tell a joke...He had some good banter with the members; they were singing along to his songs and answering his quiz questions. Some of his songs were, ‘Pretty Woman’, ‘You Got It’.The song I liked was Elvis Presley’s ‘You Gave Me A Mountain’. Dave Ross is a good ‘un... After Dave’s set Billy and Margaret Goodridge were presented with a bottle of whisky and a bouquet of flowers to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Happy Anniversary Billy and Margaret... Full House At Horbury WMC...
Yes another full house at this very popular club; on stage was The Spirit Of Smokie band. This is a three piece acoustic band with Dean Barton on lead vocals and guitar, Andy Whelan on lead guitar and harmonies and Graham Kearns on bass and harmonies. Some of the songs were, ‘Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone’,‘Broken Stones’, (A Paul Weller song). There were lots of Smokie songs as You would expect from this band. Dean’s voice is uncannily like his late father’s who would be very proud I’m sure... Westgate Common was busy for the visit of Versatility, a male/female duo’ both well attired for the stage and in fine voice; the harmonies were very good and some of the songs were, Cee Lo Green’s ‘Forget You’, ‘You Give Love A Bad Name’. The one that did it for me was the Gladys Knight and the Pips song, ‘The Best Thing That Ever Happened’. I just love the sound of that lady's version... Terry Webster In Fine Form... This was the last night of entertainment for the Admiral Duncan in Wakefield; the brewery in its wisdom is closing the pub for refurbishment next week. The artiste was ex Rocking Berries front man, Terry Webster’ I have seen Terry many times over the years and still laugh at his comedy and marvel at his impressions. He sings songs of, well just about anybody from the 50’s and 60’s and his impersonations of Tommy Cooper, Dad’s Army characters and lots more. One song that stood out for me was Chris Montez, do you remember ‘Let’s Dance’?. Well nobody I know ever got as near to that voice as Terry Webster... |
