The Final Bow For “Rain”… This magnificent harmony band, “Rain”, took their final bow at the Lupset Hotel on Wednesday night after having almost a year off due to illness to band members. Rain opened their show with ‘The Letter’ which has been their opening song fro quite some time. Songs by the Beatles, The Swinging Blue Jeans, The Byrds, The Turtles, The Everly Brothers, The McCoy’s and many more. They saved their best ‘til last which was, the Creedence Clearwater Revival’s, ‘What Have They Done To The Rain’, for which they received a standing ovation and deservedly so. I, for one, will miss this superb band as will many others. There were musicians from lots of local band s there supporting this “Final Curtain”. Of course there were some tears. Tom has decided to retire? Gibson, the lead guitarist is retiring to the Isle Of White; he is suffering with arthritis in his ankles and was clearly in a lot of pain last night. I wish him well; he is a great guitarist and a gentleman and a friend. I will miss his smile and his humour. There is another band coming on to the scene called, ‘Rain’, Norman and Mick are already rehearsing with two more musicians so we will be hearing another good harmony band. More news on that at a later date. The Stu Page Band
Report by Chris Gill What a magnificent turn out tonight; this has to be one of the busiest Country Music Club nights we have seen at The Wakefield City Club. On stage at Gilly’s C.M.C was the brilliant guitarist and singer Stu Page backed by his band including his son Tom on bass and Roy Whyke on drums. Their three sets were a joy to listen to as they went through the years from old to new country. Songs featured were "You Been Gone So Long" by Jessie Coulter ... "Garden Party" By Ricky Nelson ... "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" by Creedence Clearwater Revival. As a country picker Stu has worked with artistes such as Kris Kristofferson, Ricky Skaggs, James House, Jim Glaser, Billie Jo Spears, Gail Davies and Carl Perkins to name a few. Stu as also produced albums for The Haleys and country favourites Iona & Andy... Considering how many were in the club the order once again was amazing. Well done Guys and Gals… Stu started to realise his love for music as early as ten years old. His grandmother had a drapery shop in Stanningley nr Pudsey and further down the row was “Mrs Dickinson’s”. sweet shop. Here he got the “Real Deal” as she had a piano and this is where Stu started to plonk. Then as Stu says, "This is when the Beatles and the 60s influences came in and I had to have a guitar". Stu names Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis as some of his early influences as he listened to these on the Light Programme and Home Service.... The forerunners to Radio 1 and 2. (Showing his age now eh?) When Stu got his first guitar, his father being an engineer thought the thick strings were the highest ones so it was straight back to the shop for new ones. Until he realised his mistake. No help there then? So this led Stu to be self taught. If this artiste and this turn out at the club is a sign of things to come we are in for a hell of a ride. Next week on stage is Ex Shack Band front man Phil Lloyd. Keep it country y’all! Don’t forget the website! wwwgillyscountrymusicclub.moonfruit.com Just copy and paste or just Google it. Pictured below; The Stu Page Band and A Full House... Every seat was taken.... Pictured; John McSeverny on his post man's bike... The Shepherds Arms Open Mic... Monday night is when the Shepherds Arms has its Jam session or Open Mic as some prefer to call it. This week it was hosted by Postman, John McSeverny. He played and sang a few songs before introducing some of the people who had turned up to join in the fun. One was Jake who was using a new guitar. Jake is a Beatles fan and sings lots of their songs. Bob sings and sounds more than a little like Johnny Cash. One that caught my eye (and ears) was Jodie who is a folk singer. She often sings her own compositions so I don’t really know the titles, BUT, I’m not bothered, the songs sounded wonderful; Jodie has a crystal clear voice and her voice range is excellent, she is pretty good on the guitar too. A few friends appeared in the pub, namely, Jack and Robin, Nathan who sings in a couple of bands and Kevin who likes music… For a good and relaxing live music night out on a Monday night it’s the Shepherds Arms…. Pictured below is folk singer/guitarist 'Jodie'. This is your new blog post. Click here and start typing, or drag in elements from the top bar.
Don't Miss Top 60's Harmony Band; "Rain", On Wednesday Night June 29th, at 'The Lupset'. Horbury Road, Wakefield WF2 8JF.
This the last appearance of this band. Don't Miss..Tom, Mick, Gibson and Norman's Swansong... Willow Park club in Pontefract was a very busy place on Sunday night; on stage was a singer called Adam Le Feuvre from Leeds. He was dressed very smartly in a suit and red shirt with a matching tie. Adam has a good voice which he demonstrated in his excellent choice of songs; he has a good sound system and his links from one song to another works well. Some of his songs were, ‘Shine’, My Girl, Hold Me Close and Rotterdam’. The one I liked best was a Michael Jackson ballad, ‘She’s Out Of My Life’. The really good relaxed style of Adam Le Feuvre... The Scratch band made an appearance at Wakefield’s newest music venue, The British Oak, in Rooks Nest Road, Stanley. WF1 3DZ There were quite a few in there but with more notice we could have had a full house. What was there was very encouraging for Fiona and Andy; The Scratch Band will be there again next Saturday so tell your friends. The music they played was well received by the customers; the band was in fine form as they went through their repertoire, I Drove All Night, Mexican Girl, and Sultans Of Swing. Volunteer Stan The Man sang ‘How Long’ and ‘Doctor – Doctor that went down well, Mr T sang,’ Save The Last Dance For Me’, (And I Enjoyed that, we had a bit of fun). the Scratch Band will return to the British Oak, next Saturday because the regulars there want to bring their families and friends to see them. So... If YOU want a seat, be early.. 0n Saturday night at Westgate Common club, I saw a three piece Liverpool band called Touch Down; it was my first viewing of this superb (and I mean superb) band. Advertised as a Shakin’ Stevens and Elvis Presley show, I was pleasantly surprised when they sang the songs of lots of other artistes. Owen Pauls,‘You’re My Favourite Waste Of Time, The Four Tops song, ‘She Was My Girl’, Roy Orbison’s, ‘You Got It’, Shakin Stevens, Marie – Marie and, A Love Worth Waiting For’. There was Paul Leyton on Keyboards, The beautiful Lisa Paulson on 3 keyboards, she also looked after the sound and lights and added the harmonies to lead singer Phil King’s songs. I just loved Lisa’s version of Dionne Warwick and Friends, ‘That’s What Friends Are For’ in which she was accompanied by Paul on Harmonica; that was marvellous; what a lovely voice Lisa has. I could go on about this band that has, (I was told by concert secretary, Les Turfrey), appeared at Westgate three times now. I look forward to seeing them again. Touch Down... Waiting for a Picture ... Friday Night In The Wakefield City Club. The concert room, the lounge and the bar areas were all very busy on Friday night... on stage on the concert room was the very popular Wakefield singer, Dean Hubert who was performing his Billy Fury tribute show. He was, as always, immaculately dressed and his sound was first class. The lights were operated by his lovely wife, Jane. ‘Halfway To Paradise, When Will You Say You Love Me’ and many more Fury songs rang out from the stage, a couple of Marty Wilde songs and an Eden Kane song amongst lots more from the 50’s and 60’s. The music was right up my street. Dean told me that the second half was the more well known Billy Fury songs. He really did have a great night. If you have never seen the Booze Brothers and like Country Rock, watch out for them. Don and Robin sing and play some good stuff. I caught up with them on Friday night at the Crown in Alverthorpe, near Wakefield. It was a full house and the guys were in sparkling form. Two guitars and backing tracks, (Nothing wrong with that).. 'Whisky In The Jar and Dirty Old Town were a couple of their songs and with Robin's comedy, it was a good night... Graham Pickles was in the pub and he told me that the Original Muldoons are reforming on November 26th at the Batley Frontier Club. More news as it reaches me.. |
