Walking Back To Happiness. Crigglestone WMC in Wakefield was very busy for the Walking Back To Happiness Show on Sunday night. Although the two people in the show are Dean and Jane Hubert, Dean asks me to say it is not a Two Steps Forward show. There are songs from the 50’s and the 60’s in the show which opened with Jane singing a Connie Francis 1961 hit, ‘Where The Boys Are’, Bobby Vee, (Dean) sang, ‘The Night Has A Thousand Eyes’. There were songs by Brenda Lee, Cliff Richard, Tommy Steele, Shirley Bassey, (This was brilliant), Alma Cogan, Billy Fury, Susan Maughan, (Remember Bobby’s Girl?) and Helen Shapiro and many more. All these were in the first half of the show. Dean and Jane have done a lot of research for the show even having a radio voice over introducing the songs and singers. The outfits were wonderful showing what we were wearing in those days of pop music. There were lots of costume changes. The second part of the show is about Rock and Roll, I am looking forward to seeing that. I would recommend this show which is in two 45 minute sets to most clubs and dare I say Theatres…
A busy house at Horbury Club when that lovable duo, Scandal was the act on stage: two of the nicest people in show biz, Audrey and Craig Parsons make up the duo. Audrey looked stunning in a short dress, a striped dress in lilac and black stripes that change colour with their impressive lights show; loved the shoes.... Craig is always very smart and was wearing a dark trousers with a tunic top. The PA sound was brilliant. it was a powerful opening song that set the scene for a great night of entertainment, 'You Should Be Dancing' followed by 'Romeo And Juliet, Just Haven't Met You Yet and Don't Stop Believing'. There were some superb harmonies and the rapport with the members was something else. You really must see, "Scandal"...
Michelle Montuori was the artiste on stage at Wakefield City club on Friday night; I saw Michelle recently at the Blackpool Command show where she shone amongst a galaxy of clubland Stars. Tonight she appeared in a beautiful sequined evening dress/gown with shoes that must have made her 6` 6". Michelle has a lovely voice and can sing anything from the 60's to present to operatic arias with her very strong voice. Tonight she sang a couple from the 60's and 70's which had the members and visitors singing along; there was lots of banter between her and John in the box and members of the audience. What a Star... Michelle Montuori!
No! It's Not Me; two of my friends Sue, (Amy Thomas) and Debbie, (Emma Dale) are to embark on a Trek across part of the Sahara desert on the 24th March to 31st March along with others from the Hospice to raise funds for the Hospice. Darren Payne, (AKA Jonathan Carroll), is staging a show at Castleford Tigers in June at the Marquee at the Castleford Tigers ground. He has asked several acts from clubland to help out and included in the line up are; Simply 'H', a strong rock and roll and ballads singer, The Sharpe Experience, a top comedy duo, Amy Thomas and Emma Dale, Jonathan Carroll and out of retirement for one night only, Mr. T. to compere the show. More details later... If anyone would like to sponsor this Hospice Fund Raising Trek. Please let me know and I will pass on the information to the Hospice Fundraising Team...
Little Sam Lyons and Kim Brodie appeared as Freshly Squeezed at a charity show in Doncaster’s Hyde Park club on Thursday, [21st April]. The club was pretty busy when I arrived; also on the show was a young man called Harrison Scott. There was to have been another female act but unfortunately she was unable to appear. The show was opened by Harrison who looked very smart on stage; he has a pleasant voice and chose some good songs; his best songs for me were from the swing era. ‘Cry Me A River’, ‘Ain’t that A Kick In The Head’ and ‘That’s Life’.
There was a raffle in which about 100 prizes had been donated, [I didn’t win one, and yes! I did buy some tickets],
After a couple of bingo games it was time for, “Freshly Squeezed”, Sam and Kim would go to the ends of the Earth in the name of Charity. They always look good great on stage; their sound and lights systems are second to none and they know how to use them. ‘On A Mission’ is their opening song because these two lovely ladies are always on a mission… This was followed by lots of energy draining choreography. And that’s just the audience! The comedy flows and I’m sure there’s a guy follows them everywhere called, ‘Harry Potter’. Sam always points him out. I liked their versions of ‘Amazed’ and a song called, ‘’Get You’.
The two charities ‘Arora’ and ‘Open Caste’ shared a magnificent £820. Well done to all concerned...
Heat 6... Wakefield Star Search.
There were five contestants tonight all wanting to get to the ¼ finals; after Jonathan Carroll’s opening song, ‘Reach Out’, he introduced Charley Grace from Hemsworth. She was wearing a silver top over black trousers. She has a strong voice and chose to sing in her set, ‘Use Somebody and I think We’re Alone Now’. Next was Lesley Carr from Middlestown; Lesley has an operatic style of voice; she wore a long yellow skirt and a black top. In her set she sang, ‘Tonight and The Music Of The Night’. Natalie-Anne from Wakefield was next; she has a lovely voice and was dressed in a sassy cocktail dress; [Liked the shoes]. Natalie-Anne sang, ‘Someone Like You and For One Night Only’. After a short interval Jonathan sang a Lionel Richie song called, ‘Hello’. I liked that... He then introduced Horbury tribute singer, Andrew Lloyd; Andrew was dressed in a very smart suit complete with shirt and tie. He has a fine voice and sang a couple of Cliff Richard songs; ‘I Could Easily Fall In Love’ and All My Love’. He also sang songs by other artistes, Tommy Steele and Frank Sinatra spring to mind. This was my first viewing of Andrew and I liked what I heard. The final act was a mother and daughter duo from Hull called Marie-Marie; both were dressed in long evening gowns, both have terrific voices and sing in perfect harmony. ‘Unchained Melody’ which they sung in Italian and, ‘Enough Is Enough,[No More Tears} were a couple of their impressive songs.
The three acts chosen for the quarter finals; Natalie-Anne, Charley Grace and Marie-Marie. Commiserations to Lesley and Andrew who gave us a great night of entertainment.

As I was unable to get to Gilly's CMC on Tuesday I got This Report From Chris, 'Gilly', Gill... Another packed house at Gilly’s CMC in the Wakefield City Club and I mean packed to see award winning band WRANGLER, Cross country uk band of the year winners in 2005. Musician of the year Lee Jeffery 2006; Band of the year runners up 2006. Country routes northern star band of the year 2009. Wrangler was smartly turned out with a change of stage clothes for each set. These lads know their stuff and Lee is stunning on lead guitar. Songs they sang "They Call Me The Breeze", written by JJ Cale.. "Perfect Picture" by Doug Supernaw and "There Stands The Glass" by Web Peirce. One party had come from as far as Derbyshire. The down side to the evening is that they are to disband at the end of August due to rising prices in petrol and failing venues ... (but not ours fingers crossed) But the up side is they have agreed to do their 2nd to last gig at Gilly’s on August 16th. Their last gig will be at The Painted Wagon CMC, Croft, Darlington, on 28th August. What a big loss this will be to British country music but I’m sure everyone wishes them all the best. http://www.wranglerband.co.uk/index.html =
What A Show At The "Boot". The Boot And Shoe pub in Ackworth was exceptionally busy on Tuesday night. There are two new presenters in the form of Karen King and Dave Seville who are two top solo entertainers from our clubs who opened the show with a couple of songs. From Dave it was an Erasure medley and from Karen a request for, Unchained Melody. The format of the Tuesday night shows is to introduce the featured act and then guest artistes are encouraged to bring a disc and, “Give us a couple of songs. Tonight’s featured artiste was top club land duo, Picture This’ Paul and Angie make up this duo’. A nonstop musical extravaganza came from the stage of this almost a mini theatre. Picture This opened their show with a duet of Poker Face; lots of up tempo songs followed including my favourite for the night, a Take That song, “Rule The World”. There were lots of regulars and some club land artistes in the room including, Lee Lambert, Steffi Ackroyd, Sonya, Danny Tetley, Johnny Evans, The P 45’s, Bob Taylor, Chris Lafferty, Tristran Drew and Amy Davison. Sorry if I missed anyone out but it really was a very busy night and a fabulous atmosphere.
