It's All There In The Poster Folks
My first stop tonight was at the Horse & Jockey in Horbury Bridge where I saw Johnny (The Fat Lad) Martell. I wish Landlady Karen Wharton’s customers would give her more support. John was in fine form with a few of his jokes and his voice. I have said before that if Johnny’s singing voice ever
failed him, (God forbid) he would still be a top drawer act as a comic. A couple of his songs tonight were the Bill Withers song, ‘Lovely Day’ and ‘The Impossible Dream’. Good ‘uns Johnny. Whilst in the H&J, Kayleigh Pearman was encouraged to sing a song from Phantom Of The Opera, ‘Wishing You Were Somewhere Here Again’. Kayleigh sang this song as well as "anyone" I have heard, it was absolutely wonderful Kayleigh. I called in at the Lupset on Horbury road where I had a chat with the new Manager, Claire, Claire has booked some bands in for Saturday nights including Wakefield’s own, ‘Scratch Band’ on April 20th followed by a band called ‘Natural Rhythm’ and on June 8th it’s Styckleback. The Lupset has had a really good refurbishment... Food is served daily from 12 noon to 9pm and it looks and smells delicious... My next visit was to the Nash in Castleford where I saw that lovely lady, ‘Melissa’; she is such a lovely singer. her links from one song to another are really witty and good. The club was very busy as it usually is. Melissa looked beautiful in a short sparkly dress, (Lts). One of her songs was the Cher song, ‘Believe’. What a super show; well done that lady ... My final call was in the Admiral Duncan in Wakefield; there had been a feast of music including....Matt Hodges at 5pm. Will Booth at 8pm and The Undecided at 9pm. The place was buzzing. Manager Kieran Hall told me it had been a very busy day... Sharlston ARLC was very busy tonight, there was an 84th birthday party taking place. On stage was local band, Vinyl Legacy, a 5 piece band from the Pontefract area. Mick, Norman, Trevor Midgley, Trevor Sergeant and Dave is the line up. All are excellent musicians and singers. Another feature of the band is the fact that they now have keyboards on stage; there were songs by Christie, Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, The Searchers, the Hollies and lots more. A great sound from a super band, *Vinyl Legacy*... In the club tonight were two of the members of ‘The Hitmen And Her’, (Pictured Below), who were a very successful trio from a couple of years ago; John and his lovely wife told me they hope to be coming back into our clubs and will be in touch if and when they do. I certainly hope they do, they were really good... The Admiral Duncan was very busy tonight; the engaged band tonight was the very popular, Big Time Charlie.
I got my information from Sue as I was unable to get there. There were lots of people who used to come to the Duncan having been to from other local bands who were having a night off and some new faces too. This band is a must see band who play music from all eras, and very good they are too. If you see them advertised at a venue near you, go and have a look. John Fitzpatrick "John is The Bees Knees". This was a remark from a member of the Selby Railway Club tonight; the club was quite busy on this very cold night. John Fitzpatrick was the man in question and there is no doubt that he is a very good entertainer; he is pleasant both on and off stage, he has a wonderful voice and is funny. John carries a good PA and knows his way around it. He has a very good range and a good controlled vibrato too. A few of his songs tonight were, The Tremeloes, ‘My Little Lady’, Matt Monro’s, ‘Around The World’, (Up Tempo), ‘The Sunny Side Of The Street’ which was recorded by several artistes from the 1950’s including, Johnny Ray. Yes John most certainly is a very good all round entertainer and Sharon, his missus is lovely too... Thanks to Danny Harris for inviting me... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Come and listen to "McKenzie" at GILLY'S C.M.C.TUESDAY

Tonight there was a surprise waiting for me; on stage was a lady called
“Lady Garden”who was actually, ‘Sonya’. She was dressed in a Red and White dress with a jacket. LTS, (I think). *Lady Garden* (Sonya), opened her show with Lady Gaga’s, ‘Bad Romance’, followed by Celine Dion’s, ‘I’m Alive’. There followed a flurry of one liners and comical observations, I won’t repeat any you will have to catch her show, (You can book Sonya, [*Lady Garden* through the Ricky Graham Leisure agency, 01977 673500}... Sonya’s best song was, ‘Sweet Child Of Mine’. I would pay good money to see this amazing lady; she has a voice to die for. Sonya has been living in Nottingham, but has now returned to us in 'Sunny Yorkshire'. Welcome back love and well done on the night... The next act was a young man from Castleford called Rubix; he was smartly dressed in a dark suit, shirt and tie; he has a good voice and his music was largely from the 80’s. The songs of ABC, Spandau Ballet, Human League, Heaven 17, King and Frankie Goes to Hollywood... a good set from Rubix... Our next auditionee was a lovely looking young lady, Bradford’s Gabriella, (No, not that one)... she was dressed in a short skirt and a black glittering top, (Lts). Her voice and her PA is good too. Some of her songs were, ‘My Guy’, ‘Next To Me’, ‘It’s In His Kiss’ and ‘Get Ready’. Well done Gabriella... The final act tonight was Martin McGuire from Hemsworth looking very smart in a sharp suit, shirt and tie... again, a good PA and a good voice...some of his songs, [in between the one liners were, a medley of Paper Lace songs, ‘Billy Don’t Be A Hero’ and ‘The Night Chicago Died’. There was a Drifters song, ‘Save The Last Dance For Me’ and a George Formby song in a modern way, ‘When I’m Cleaning Windows... a very entertaining set from Martin McGuire... .... See you Next Month...At The Willows Social Club in Pontefract... Fourth Heat Of Wakefield Star Search.
Westgate Common was fairly busy tonight for this heat; Stuart Eden opened the show with a song and he introduced the Judges, announced the Sponsors and then…. Introduced the first entrant, South Kirkby lady, ‘Demmi’ who is a singer I have seen many times both in competition and on the clubs circuit. She was dressed well for the stage, (Lts). Demmi has a magnificent voice and in her set sang, ‘Son Of A Preacher Man’, ‘Midnight Train To Georgia’ and ‘You Don’t have To Say You Love Me’. A good opening act, well done Demmi. Next was Kayleigh who has an opera trained voice, she looked good in her stage outfit, (Lts). Kayleigh sang in hers set, ‘Hopelessley Devoted To You’ and a super version of ‘I Will Always Love You’. Our next act was a two girls duo called, ‘Bellisimo’. Sophie and Emma looked good in their stage attire, (Ltbs) make up this duo; two lovely voices and some good harmonies. they sang in their set, ‘Bad Romance’, ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ and ‘Beneath You’re Beautiful’. Yet another good act… After the interval Stuart introduced, Paige, Nicola and Nikita who are, ‘Karma’. They were dressed in modern stage outfits,(Lts); their voices are individually good and the harmonies were beautiful. A couple of thior songs were, ‘DNA’, a Little Mix Song and ‘Waterfall’ by TLC. The final act was a soul and Motown singer called Lionel who was very smart in a dark stage suit and a silver shirt, (Lts). Lionel sang in his set, ‘Soul Man’, ‘In Your Eyes’ and ‘My Girl’. The standard tonight was very good but as always only three can go to the next stage; they are, in no particular order, Demmi, Karma and Kayleigh… Hard luck to the other two acts, Bellismo and Lionel… Westgate Common, (Gilly’s CMC) welcomed the John Taylor Band...
My second and last visit was to a very busy Gilly’s CMC in Westgate Common; on stage was The John Taylor Band. The line up is, John Taylor on lead vocals, Tony Hornsby on bass guitar and vocals, Steve Place on lead guitar and vocals, (Steve is a Roy Orbison tribute singer), Lee Guyler on drums and vocals with Darren Binns on keyboards and vocals. Some of the songs were, Delbert McClinton’s, ‘Same Kind Of Crazy’, ‘Fast Moving Train’,‘Moving Heart’, there were a few self composed songs; Vince Gill’s ‘Lisa Jane’,Jeff Lynn’s, ‘Free Falling’ and the one I liked best of all was, Ketty Lester’s, ‘Love Letters’... another great night from the John Taylor band... |
